Scope The conference will be concerned with both experimental and theoretical approaches to the study_ of all aspects of mechanical behaviour involving high rates of strain. There will be four main sessions each opened with a review lecture by an invited speaker. I. MatcnEal Pnopc~,ti(:~ (Professor L. E. Malvern, University of Florida). 2. Fracture undcr Dynamic" Loadin~j (Dr F. Nilsson, Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate, Stockholm). 3. Surface Impact Phenomc.na (Dr J. E. Field, University of Cambridge). 4. Impact of Structurec (Professor S. R. Bodner, Israel Institute of Technolegy, Haifa).

CaZ~ for Paper~ Offers of papers describing current work in these four general areas will be welcome. Prospective authors are asked to submit titles and synopses (three copies, maximum length 500 words) not later than I June, 1983 to the Conference Secretary, Dr J. Harding. The selection by the Conference Committee of a paper for presentation at the conference will be based on the synopsis which should, therefore, be as informative as possible. Essential figures and references may be included. The Conference Proceedings will be published and instructions regarding preparation of final manuscripts will be forwarded at a later date.
