designed to allow the participant to view a complaint of pain with a fresh eye. We will discuss the pathogenesis of pain, patient complaints, and physical findings associated with various painful syndromes and how these findings drive drugtherapy decision-making. Part of this assessment is consideration of cultural differences among patients, both physiologic and psychosocial. Participants will learn to critically select among therapeutic categories of analgesics, and select dose and monitor specific analgesics to optimize patient outcomes. Public policy implications regarding analgesic use will also be discussed, particularly the ramifications for end-of-life care. Domain Physical Aspects of Care
Through the Looking Glass: Making Sense of APN Billing (P18) Constance Dahlin, MSN RN ANP ACHPNÒ, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA. (Dahlin has disclosed no relevant financial relationships.) Objectives 1. Discuss current updates in APN billing and reimbursement. 2. Describe APN billing and coding in various settings. 3. Discuss pros and cons of independent billing versus incident to billing. APN billing and reimbursement is complex because of the CMS rules and regulations. This workshop will review current topics in billing, reimbursement, and coding to assist APNs to effectively bill. APN billing and reimbursement, with its complexities, is an essential part of practice. Usually, there is no specific education on reimbursement and skill acquisition occurs on the job. This session will outline the fundamentals of APN reimbursement in various settings. It will also provide an update of CMS rules and regulations that guide practice. University, Atlanta, GA. Joan Halifax, PhD, Upaya Institute and Zen Center, Santa Fe, NM. Cynda Rushton, PhD RN FAAN, Potomac, MD. (All speakers have disclosed no relevant financial relationships.) Objectives 1. Discuss neuroscience research on attention, empathy, and compassion. 2. Discuss how to use mindful attention and prosocial mental qualities in their clinical practice. 3. Discuss how contemplative interventions can enrich their work as professional caregivers. This workshop will complement the keynote plenary address given by Joan Halifax, PhD. Emerging neuroscience indicates that nonsectarian Buddhist contemplative practices provide mental training that changes the attentional capacity, increases the capacity for empathy and compassion, and decreases the stress response of the clinician. In this workshop, we provide an introduction to foundational contemplative practices that can enlarge the reflective and attentional capacity of clinicians in their everyday practice. Following the introduction, experiential practice will be co-facilitated by an interdisciplinary team with expertise in palliative care and contemplative practice. This program will provide participants with a practical experiential introduction to the practices of mindful attention and the prosocial mental qualities of kindness, empathy, and compassion. These practices have the potential to enrich patient-clinician communication and professional satisfaction, as well as mitigate clinician stress and burnout. The connections between emerging neuroscience, attentional capacity, and clinical skills will be emphasized in an overview and in interactive debriefings, providing participants with ample opportunity to reflect on their experiences at the workshop. While clinicians with existing contemplative practice at every level will be welcome, this workshop is especially designed for clinicians who have little or no background in these practices.
