Akzo buys South Korean slip agents business In line with its strategy of developing its presence in Asia, Akzo Nobel Polymer Chemicals business unit has purchased the amides business of Daejin Fine Chemicals Co, South Korea. It will operate under the name Akzo Nobel Amides Co Ltd. The amide products are used as slip and antiblock agents, mainly in production of polyethylene and polypropylene films and foils, especially for use in the packaging industry. The purchase, which includes Daejin’s production plant at Kyungju, makes Akzo Nobel one of the top three amides producers in the world, and enables the company to globalize and rationalize its business further. It already has production facilities in Italy and the USA. Akzo’s Polymer Chemicals business unit has world-leading positions in organic peroxides, metal alkyls and Ziegler-Natta and other polymerization catalysts, with production at 15 plants worldwide and sales in 1997 amounting to some NLGl 1 billion. Dedicated line for stabilizer will meet growing demand A new dedicated line for production of Cyasorb 1084 nickel phenolate light stabilizer has been brought on stream by Cytec Industries BV at its plant at Botlek, The Netherlands. It permits the company to streamline production of the stabilizer, which is reported to be in strong demand worldwide, for applications ranging from agricultural film to artificial turf Market Manager Robert Gray notes that the new dedicated line is an automated process using upgraded equipment. The company, which is a subsidiary of Cytec Industries Inc and a leading supplier of light stabilizers, antioxidants and antistatic agents, has recently doubled its capacity at Botlek for production of benzotriazole stabilizers (Addirivesfir Polymers, October 1998). Colour and additive masterbatch producer Ampacet has placed itself in a good position for continued growth in the MERCOSUR countries and in other parts of South America by the establishment of a joint venture with Biblos Color SA, in Argentina.
Ticona seeks partner for high performance additive
To be named Ampacet de Argentina, it will augment the current production facility of Biblos with a modern facility, to offer the latest technology in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. President David S Weil said that plans were being finalized to commence construction immediately while, in the meantime, the existing Biblos facilities
Ticona, the technical polymers subsidiary of Hoechst (which is being prepared for stock market floatation as an independent company), is looking for a partner for its Ceramer polyphenylene sulphone (PPSO,) additive. PPSO, can substantially improve the tribological behaviour (resistance to wear and abrasion, and anti-friction properties) of high performance plastics and has a broad application range in polymers and coatings. Typical applications include as an additive in fluoropolymers, where it can increase the wear resistance of products such as pushpull automotive control cables, seals, bearings and coatings for household appliances. It meets all FDA requirements as an additive for PTFE and the company has applied for official approval. New applications include use as an additive in high performance polymers such as polyaryletherketone and polyimide, in the semiconductor industry and mechanical engineering. It is also a promising material for flame-spraying coating high temperature technology with ceramics. NEW EQUIPMENT New additive feeder offers a colour change in seconds Colour changes in seconds are claimed by equipment manufacturer Colortronic GmbH, for its new low-rate gravimetric additive feeder, Graviblend S. It provides feed rates of SO-100 grams/hour, according to bulk density, and is designed with quick-action clamps for the dosing hopper and screw on the micro ingredient feeding system, to allow the user to change dosing systems and make colour changes quickly and efficiently. Any cleaning required for the dosing hopper and screw can be carried out off-line. The unit has been designed for continuous feeding of bulk material for applications where precise low feeding rates for granules are needed, such as fibre, cable, filament and tubing, and laboratory lines. Its construction and advanced technology brings optimization to low rate feeding applications, with compact construction for easy and quick installation. Low weight causes good mass resolution of the metered material and a special damping system offers reliable protection against mechanical disturbances such as vibrations.
