Additives for Polymers
More SIP to meet demand for dyeing and water-solubles DuPont is aiming to expand its sulphonated isophthalates (SIP) business with a 70% increase in capacity at its Chambers Works plant in New Jersey, USA and an increase in derivatives capacity. The company is a leading supplier of SIPS, which are mainly used to provide cationic dyeability and stain resistance to synthetic fibres and water solubility to a variety of resin systems. The products are based on 5sulphoisophthalate acid and its derivatives. Work on the project is already with completion expected by Phase 1, focusing on the capacity tives, is already completed and production has started.

The expansion is driven by increasing demand from the synthetic fibres industry, while there is also a broadening use in water-dispersible resin systems, for coatings, . adhesives and other applications where low VOC, environmentally cleaner products are required. Tioxide record marred by accident A record environmental performance during the past year is reported by ICI for its Tioxide subsidiary (which is due to be sold). But the publication of the report was marred by an explosion at the plant. According

0 acid gas emissions to air fell by 19%, as also did discharges which could lead to ozone creation. The reductions can, in part, be attributed to the closure of a plant at Burnie, Tasmania, but a further investment of &15 million in new environmental protection equipment at remaining plants has ensured improvement in overall performance. MARKETING Strong growth forecast for reinforced plastics in USA Demand for reinforced plastics in the USA will grow at 3.3% per year, to total nearly 1.78 million tonnes, worth over $5 billion, in 200 1. A report from Freedonia says that use of reinforced thermoset polyesters in construction, automotive and marine products will increase from the levels of 1987-1996 driving the annual rate of growth to 3%/year plastics,
