644 Bruns’ Beitrtige zur klinischen

Chirurgie (Esser, 1916a, b). A fasciocutaneous flap of the thoracic area is mentioned by Esser in 1918 in a German article (Esser, 19 18a), which was quoted in a paper published 2 years ago in this journal (Tolhurst and Haeseker, 1982). The aim of this communication is to stress the importance of being more precise and accurate when listing and quoting from historical references. Unless this is done it becomes very difficult to trace the original work and, once given a place in the literature, an incorrect reference will reappear year after year in our scientific journals. Readers of this journal may be interested to learn that a complete bibliography of Esser’s writings has recently been published (Haeseker, 1983).

which clearly describe the use of palatopharyngeus and illustrate the formation of a sphincter. The use of a flap on the posterior pharyngeal wall (instead of an incision which is spread apart) is surely a modification not an original breakthrough. The introduction of a correspondence section in the Journal would, I believe, enable the facts to be straightened out or made less bent on occasions.

References The interesting paper by Lendrum and Dhar in the April 1984 issue of the Journal (The Orthicochea dynamic pharyngoplasty: British Journal of Plastic Surgery, 1984, 37, 160) is worthy of comment. Like Jackson and Silverton (1977) they ignore Hynes’ paper
