Together we can meet the challenge Some important events are coming up for ISES in the next few months. First will be a meeting between the newly-appointed director general of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Hélène Pelosse, and ISES executive director, Christine Hornstein. This will be an opportunity for ISES to present its capability statement and investigate ways in which ISES can play a useful and significant role within IRENA. It is heartening to see that Ms Pelosse is seeking views and active participation not only from Governments but from NGOs such as ours. At the meeting we will explore how our large network of renewable energy experts, researchers and members can be used to best effect. Following on from the IRENA meeting will be a meeting of members of the Renewable Energy Alliance (REN Alliance) at the WBA conference in Stockholm, September 2009. This alliance includes the International Geothermal Association (IGA), the International Hydropower Association (IHA), ISES, the World Bioenergy Association (WBA) and the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA). At this meeting there will not only be a discussion of how the REN Alliance members can jointly help IRENA – and Ms Pelosse will be able to attend this meeting as well – but also of how we will finalise our joint approach to presenting a side event at the critical COP15 meeting in Copenhagen, taking place in December 2009. The importance of a joint approach to the global solution of world energy needs by all renewable energy technologies cannot be stressed enough. As all countries have some type of renewable energy resource, we must co-operate in determining and deploying the best mix of technologies, policies, standards and educational programmes for a particular region. This is ultimately the only way that a low carbon future will be achieved. While only some programmes will be globally applicable, there is plenty of scope for different renewable energy technologies to combine their strengths and provide dispatchable and reliable power at all sites. The challenge is to work together harmoniously to make this happen. Finally, our own ISES Solar World congress is almost upon us, 11-14 October 2009, in Johannesburg, South Africa. The programme is now available at www.swc2009.co.za, along with a list of keynote speakers and a range of accompanying events. As ISES congresses provide one of the few opportunities in renewable energy worldwide for research students – the solar energy experts of the future – to give reviewed presentations of their work, it is always good to encourage their enthusiasm and innovation as well as hearing from current world experts. I hope many will be able to attend this important event and I look forward to receiving, on behalf of ISES, a message from participants that we can take to COP15.
