Top 10 Internet Scams — What works? The leading top 10 Internet frauds have been produced by the National Consumer League (NCL). One scam that is enjoying accelerating growth is the Nigerian money scam — a very old scam, that has been around for years. This scam represents 9% of all reported fraud. 28 655 individuals were surveyed and only 6% of these claim to never receiving scam-related material. The top 10 Internet scams as reported by the NCL are as follows: 1 Online auctions — Invented merchandise being sold to bidders online.
2 General merchandise — Goods available for sale on a website that were not as promised or never delivered. 3 Nigerian money scam — Appeals from Africa requesting help to transfer bank funds. 4 Computer equipment/software — Computer-related items that were never delivered or falsely represented. 5 Internet access scams — charges from Internet Service Providers that were never ordered and/or received. 6 Information/Adult services — False credit card or phone bill costs for services never delivered or falsely displayed as free. 7 Work from home scams — Ideas for making money sold on the false claim of making huge profits. 8 Advance fee loans — Bogus loans
demanding application fees etc. in advance. 9 Credit Card Offers — Misleading offers of credit cards for a fee in advance. 10 Business opportunities/franchises — misleading promises of profit-making from investments in businesses. Most of the scams seem to prey on individuals with cash-flow problems. The Internet is providing a new arena for fraudsters to exploit. The Nigerian Fraud scheme has survived for around 20 years but its days may now be numbered as six people have been arrested recently in connection with this scam as reported in ZDNet. The individuals involved are believed to be members of an international group dedicated to fraud and drug dealing.
