PPG to showcased integrated coatings solutions at Intermodal EXPO 2017 PPG displayed its full range of integrated transportation coatings technologies for rail, trailer, and intermodal applications during Intermodal EXPO 2017 at the Long Beach Convention Centre in California, 17-19 Sep 2017. Pre-treatment products on display included surface cleaners and zinc-rich and zirconium-based primers, which PPG engineered to maximize the ability of its liquid, e-coat and powder coatings to resist corrosion and extend the service life of trucks, trailers, and shipping containers. PPG also showcased SPECTRACRON solvent-based and AQUACRON ultra-lowvolatile organic compound (VOC) waterbased primers and topcoats. Both products are available in a broad range of colors and in acrylic, alkyd, epoxy, and urethane formulations. Visitors to the PPG booth found information about POWERCRON ecoats and ENVIROCRON powder coatings. Powercron coatings, the industry’s most commonly used e-coat products, provide exceptional protection against corrosion and ultraviolet (UV) exposure for specialty frames and chassis-related components. Envirocron powder coatings are hard, durable, costeffective coatings that provide exceptional corrosion- and weather-resistance in proven solvent-free, low-VOC formulations.

AkzoNobel launches “world’s most advanced” paint factory in UK AkzoNobel NV has formally launched the world’s most advanced and sustainable paint facility in Ashington, UK. The project is estimated to cost over s100 M. It will become the new manufacturing facility for Dulux. The new facility utilizes several renewable energy sources, including a biomass boiler and photovoltaic cells. According to AkzoNobel, the carbon footprint per litre of paint manufactured at the facility will be decreased by half. The new project can expand the current UK manufacturing levels of the company by 100% to 200 M L/ y, while having the capacity to further increase for future growth strategy.

Tougher Chemical Restrictions in Canada? The Canadian regulatory landscape continues to churn. It is important for multinational companies to take note given the fact that more than 50 percent of coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers (CASE) are now imported into Canada. This represents a large spectrum of raw material ingredients and finished products shipped primarily from the United States. This is also critical in terms of the need to be fully compliant with existing and evolving regulations. It is critical to ensure that the plethora of substances being assessed under the federal government’s Chemicals Management Plan (CMP) has the necessary data to render decisions on substances of concern as toxic or not. In many cases, without the necessary data a substance could inadvertently be declared toxic and subject to a higher degree of risk management than necessary, including concentration limits being lowered, thus negatively impacting product performance or discontinuing certain products altogether. CPCA does not support a REACH approach, which has been widely criticized for being time consuming, costly and inefficient. Officials at Environment and Climate Change Canada agreed with that view when they stated in Committee hearings that, “REACH is an extremely timeconsuming process that requires extensive work on the part of users and producers, but that actually has a lot fewer decisions than we’ve achieved under the Chemicals Management Plan.” In the final analysis, the Opposition Minority Report stated, “Had this study been more focused and more time been allocated to receiving critical testimony, this report could have represented another step forward in improving the rigor of Canada’s environmental protection regime. Sadly, the majority’s recommendations contained in the report are in many cases NOT adequately borne out by supporting testimony and

COATINGS evidence before the Committee. They appear to reflect an ideological bias in favour of a wholesale remake of Canada’s environmental protection regime that could have a profoundly chilling effect on Canada’s economic competitiveness.” Industry groups, including CPCA, have been working since June to address the lack of balance in the report in order to prevent Canada from going down the same rocky road as the EU on chemicals management. Moving in such a direction would not serve anyone’s interests with respect to human health or the environment.

TECHNOLOGY Mobile Apps for Powder Coating Harnessing the interactive capability of our mobile devices, there are several applications (apps) that bring the powder coating world closer together and allow access to information for new projects as well as to solve problems with old ones. While the introduction of powder coating apps is fairly recent, and this survey may not include all of the apps that are available, the pace of app development is accelerating so that more exciting developments are likely to be just around the corner. The apps world is also very dynamic, so some apps may come and go, or be updated to new versions from time to time. A number of mobile apps are designed to describe powder coating products and provide technical information and pricing quotes. Another breed of mobile app helps powder coaters calculate various useful numbers. The most advanced mobile powder coating apps developed so far allow you to connect to various devices that gather
