Management of the pH of waste waters containing toxic substances can greatly reduce the cost of pollution control. This monograph, based on the author's practical experience, will be useful to students in courses dealing with environmental protection and engineers concerned with waste water.

Environmental Impacts of Artificial Ice Nucleating Agents. Edited by Donald A. Klein. Dowden, Hutchinson & Ross, Academic Press, New York. 1978. Pp. 256. Price: £13-65, US$21.00. Proceedings of a workshop held at Vail, Colorado, USA, in November 1976. Although the amount of silver introduced into the environment from attempts at weather modification is small compared with releases from mining, industrial and photo-processing, effects under particular circumstances may not be negligible. This whole question, and the use of other nucleating agents, was the subject of the workshop.

Toxic and Hazardous Waste Disposal. Processes for Stabilization/Solidification. Edited by Robert B. Pojasek. Ann Arbor Science, Ann Arbor. 1979. Vol. 1: Pp. 407, Price: £19.80; Vol. 2: Pp. 259. Price: £19.80. These two volumes give a comprehensive evaluation of the processes (Vol. 1) and the options (Vol. 2) available to those concerned with the disposal of toxic wastes. They will be of value to all those concerned with the problem, where disposal sites are becoming more difficult to find and where costs are increasing alarmingly.

Noise Control. Handbook of Principles and Practices. Edited by David M. Lipscomb and Arthur C. Taylor. Van Nostrand Reinhold, New York. 1978. Pp. 375. Price: £19.00. The importance of noise pollution and its control is being increasingly appreciated. The thirteen articles here presented, all by authorities in their field, go from a clear description of the nature of sound, and a discussion of methods of measurement of noise, to discuss particular problems (aircraft, industrial, traffic noise, etc.) and how they may be ameliorated or controlled. Although written so that it may be useful to the layman, this will also be useful to students in environmental subjects and to engineers.
