A thermodymamic ar~lysis of the frozen fringe is presented shewing the dependence of the segregation potential on suction in the fringe. Experimental results indicate that segregation potential is a function of average suction in the fringe and is also dependent on the freezing path.

Publ Wellington: New Zealand Institution of Emglneers, 1980 A 3.3km earthlined headworks canal was to be constructed at the Ruahihi hydroelectric power plant. The soils on site were founl to have high water content, high plasticity, high sensitivity amd low bulk density, due to the l~esence of allal~hane, causing l~Oblems with excavation and compaction. Compaction tests to investigate the effects of Im~e-treatment of the soil (eg. water content) were carried out in order to establish parameters for compsntior, control.

P1~152 A method for in-situ thermal property measurements is presented. It ms~kes use of the early transient temperature behaviour at the borehole wall in response to the constant heat supply in the borehole. The use of early phase is aPlropriate since the assmmption Of cylindrical radial heat flow holds with a good accuracy. Field data from Avery Island Salt Mine was used for practical application. The obtained thermal propel-ties were subsequently substituted in the nomdimensional result given by Carslaw and Jaeger ard also used as input parameters in a finite element analysis. The measured temperature behaviour was closely reproduced. ENERGY M E A ~ N T 825207 SPT ~ Kovacs, W D; Sslamone, L A J Geoteeh Engng Div ASCE, VI08, NGg~, AImil

TESTING FOR LEIGH C R E ~ COALFIELD Cavagnsro, R L Proc 3rd Australia-New Zealand Conference on Geomechanlcs, Wellington, 12-16 May 1980, VI, P237-2~2. Publ We/lington: New Zealand Institution of Engineers, i~80

The paper presents the results of some of the field and laboratory testing undertaken in providing geotechnieal mine planning constraints at the Leigh Creek Coalfield, South Australia. The approach adopted to systematically test large amounts of drill core is described. Correlations developed between the basic classification test, the Point Load Strength Index, and other more sophisticated tests used in geotechnical analysis are presented. In particular the difficulties of testing material transitional between strong 'soils' and weak 'hard rocks', the characteristics of rock defects with very low residual strengths, and the simplification of a test used in assessing diggability of bucketwheel excavators are described. Presents a simple method for calihratirg an extrmder in c~der to control the extruder ram forces. It is suggested that a l~essure gauge and a byPass valve should be incc~parated into the extruder in order to monitor the extrusion force applied to the sample.
