BOOK REVIEW Treatise on Adhesion and Adhesives: Volume 6. Edited

by ROBERT L. PATRICK, G. P. ANDERSON, AND K. L. DEVRIES. Dekker, New York, 1989. 304 pp. $99.75. The volumes in this "Treatise," published at irregular intervals over a period of 22 years, contain a series of reviews on various aspects of adhesion science. Volume 6 has seven new reviews in 290 pages. The first two deal with peel tests for adhesion and the third deals with standard test methods in general, including peel. Thus, about one-half of the book is concerned with the mechanics of fracture of adhesive joints. Although there is naturally some duplication it is illuminating and surprising to see that there is little agreement, even on the analysis of such a simple test as peeling. The first review, in particular, employs complex theoretical relations for peel force that do not appear to have been validated experimentally, in discussing new work on peeling several polymer layers apart. The remaining four articles deal with the strength of epoxies and rubber-toughened epoxies, adhesion of epoxies to carbon fibers, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of sur-

faces and interfaces, and the role of silane coupling reagents in bonding to metals. Some general comments follow: The reviews are generally good ones, comprehensive and reasonably up-todate, and cover a wide range of relevant topics. They would be a helpful, and in some cases an invaluable, guide to anyone entering that particular field. I would have liked chapter outlines or summaries, but there is a good index which goes part way toward meeting this complaint. Unfortunately, this is the last volume of Patrick's "Treatise" because of his untimely death in 1985. Also, one of the "Guest Editors," G. P. Anderson, another major contributor to adhesion science, died suddenly last year. The adhesion community and those who need to know the present status of adhesion science are much the poorer. A. N.
