SNC-Lavalin to extend capacity of Libya’s Great Man-Made River Project

NC-Lavalin has been awarded a C$450 million contract by the Great Man Made River Authority (GMMRA) in Libya to develop the Al Kufra Wellfield. The contract is part of the major GMMR water supply system currently under construction to transport potable water from the southern Libyan desert to urban centres in the north. SNC-Lavalin’s work includes the design of the Al Kufra Wellfield system and all construction related to connecting this new wellfield to the existing water distribution system including the installation of collector pipelines, pumps in 300 deep wells, the power supply and communications system. The GMMRA has been one of SNCLavalin’s major clients for the last 20 years. The Kufra scheme will provide an additional 1.68 million cubic metres of water per day to the GMMR main spine and will increase the hydraulic capacity of the existing conveyance systems in order to transport this additional flow. Construction will begin shortly with completion expected in 2015.
Veolia Water to reconstruct Marquette-lez-Lille plant
T
he Lille metropolitan area in France has awarded Veolia Water the contract to reconstruct the Marquette-lez-Lille wastewater treatment plant. Project design and construction has gone to a consortium headed by OTV France Nord, a Veolia Water subsidiary. The consortium comprises Norpac, Demathieu & Bard, Amodiag, Bonnard & Gardel and architect ALH. Work will begin shortly and will last approximately four years. Plant operation will start on 1 January 2011. Veolia Water will be the operator under a six-year contract.
The new plant will have the capacity to treat wastewater from an equivalent population of 620 000. It will have two separate treatment trains, one for wastewater (2.8 m³/ second) and the other for stormwater (5.3 m³/second).

ri-Tech Holding Inc and Beijing Anguo Water Treatment Automation Engineering Technology Co Ltd have won a joint bid for a 96 000 cubic metres per day drinking water treatment plant for the city of Ordos in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The Ordos plant will apply both ultrafiltration and nanofiltration technologies. The project will be implemented under a BuildTransfer contract and will be completed by late 2011. Phase 1 of the project will have a budget of RMB270 million. Tri-Tech and Anguo will establish an 80:20 joint venture to serve as the general contractor. Fourth Construction Co of Hebei Province will serve Tri-Tech and Anguo as the civil construction sub-contractor on the project. Tri-Tech will use flocculation, sediment and conventional filtration for pre-treatment and ultrafiltration and nanofiltration technologies for advanced treatment. The joint venture will provide the primary pressure pump station, engineering optimisation, construction, equipment procurement, installation and commissioning, operations personnel training, trial run and compilation of the operation and service manuals for the project. The project contracts are currently being negotiated. Tri-Tech expects the plant to be operational for initial trials by the end of 2011.
