Plasticizers

Q

for engineering

polymers

A

As a compounder of engineering polymers, a number of our customers have asked usfor grades with a higher degree ofjTexibili(7. What kind of additive orplasticizer could be used?

In principle, functional ethylene copolymers acting as an impact modifier can provide this effect - super toughening. This approach can provide good results in polyamide and polyesters. Another option is to add a plasticizer. N-butylbenzene sulphonamide (BBSA) is a liquid sulphonamide plasticizer suitable for polymers such as polycarbonates, polysulphones and polyamides.

For transparent PVC applications MBS core shell particles are generally used. However, the weatherability of this family of modifier is not as good as an acrylic impact modifier. However, there are some special acrylic grades that are capable of combining transparency" and excellent weatherability.

We manufacture small transparent PET bottles and one of our customers is looking for a )9ozen'e~ct. Of course, I can modi~ my mould but is there an additive that can provide the same effect?

Antistatic

q A

Weproduce ABS injected moulded parts for vacuum cleaners. We are looking for suitable antistatic agents in order to avoid dust attraction. What family of antistatic agent would be most appropriate? Suitable families of antistatic agents that can be used for ABS include the alkyl sulphonates or ethoxylated amines. Generally, an addition level of 1.5-3 wt.% is

needed.

Lubricant

There is no specific additive to give this effect, but adding a few percent of natural silica can provide a translucent look that is close to that of a 'frozen" effect.

Q

We are injection mouldingpolys~yrene parts and are looking for a suitable lubricant or a release agent. There are a great many different lubricants and lubricant families available for plastics. Which are the most appropriate lubricants for polys~yrene?

As a producer of transparent PVC sheet, one of our customers recently requestedspecific gradesfor outdoor applications. What kind impact modifier should be used?

If you need a solution to a technical problem, then register your request for free technical assistance through TechDirect on the SpecialChem platform www.specialchem.com - and you will receive a rapid response. In addition, if you have an alternative solution to a problem we have already addressed, then we would be delighted to hear from you.

The selection of the best lubricant will depend on a number of different parameters, however, generally zinc stearate or bis-stearamides provide good results.
