Appendix B: TSNC Dictionaries

Appendix B presents the details of the tagname system presented in this book, with complete ‘dictionaries’ of the fragments used in each part of the tagnames. The tagname fragments are based upon the many water and wastewater system projects that I have developed.

B.1  Tagname Signal Naming Convention The TSNC, or Tagname Signal Naming Convention, consists of 15 characters arranged into four fragments or elements; the elements are separated by an underscore, a hyphen or a period. Some SCADA Human Machine Interface (HMI) software may not allow the use of some of these delimiters, so the user will have to use whatever works best in their system. The complete tagname follows a standard format, providing successive detail about the signal, its source and the specifics of the signals, in each fragment or element. Each field has defined alphanumeric codes or phrases which can be organized into ‘dictionaries’; to construct a tagname, one assembles phrases from the various dictionaries to build a successively more detailed definition of the signal. This TSNC applies to both hardware or field signals as well as to the internal software or program points. Characters in the fourth field identify the nature of the signal and whether it is a field or a virtual type signal. For example, a pump at the New Age Pumping Station would be identified with the initial fragments of NAP_PP05. The discharge valve for the pump would be tagged as NAP_PP05_DV. And the open status limit switch on the valve would complete the tagname as NAP_PP05_DV_SOD. The last fragment, SOD, is composed of a signal type, S, and a status field, OD.

B.1.1  Structure and Format of Tagnames The general format of the TSNC tagnames is as follows, using the underscore to separate the fragments of the tagname; alternatively, the hyphen or period could also be used to separate the fragments of the tagname. LLL_ EEEE_ CC_ TSS where LLL EEEE

is the Component of the equipment, is the Type of Signal, including field or virtual, is the Signal Designation.

Note that the fourth fragment consists of two parts: a signal type (T) and a signal designation (SS); hence, this fragment serves to identify both the type of information as well as the signal detail. The LLL element identifies the geographic location of the equipment. These three alphanumeric characters define the physical location in the overall SCADA system. This fragment may be further divided into two characters for the location and one character for the type of facility. For example, HLF could denote the High Lift Station of a water treatment plant; NA indicates New Age station and the P denotes the pumping station; NAR indicates New Age and the R denotes the reservoir. The EEEE element identifies the actual equipment or device, including the unit number. This fragment can be subdivided with some characters for the equipment, and some characters for the number. Two letters for equipment allows for two digits for the unit number; three letters for the equipment results in one letter for the unit; four letters could be used to designate the complete facility. Consider the following examples: HLPx BPVx BLDG FLxx PPxx

The CC element identifies the component of subsystem of the main equipment or device. If the entire equipment is being referenced as a single unit, then the CC field could be ‘00’. Typically, the CC field indicates the part of the equipment being referenced such as DV for discharge valve, IV for inlet valve and DG for drain gate. Some examples of component fragments are shown below: RWP2_DV RWL1_FT TWP4_PT

One additional use for the component element is to designate one of several unit signals associated with the basic equipment element. For example, a motor may have four RTD temperature sensors associated with it, so the component field can be the numbered sensor: HLF_HLP5_01_ATA HLF_HLP5_02_ATA HLF_HLP5_03_ATA HLF_HLP5_04_ATA

The TSS element combines two parts: the signal type, T, and the signal designation, SS. Since one of the goals of the TSNC is to adopt a universal naming system for both the field hardware signals and the internal program points, the signal type, T, indicates which of several point types applies to the tagname.

Note that the virtual points are those for which there is no hardware or field counterpart; it is not wired to anything in the field. For example, if the two analog input signals, HLF_RWL1_FT_QFI and HLF_RWL2_FT_QFI are added together, the sum may be stored in a virtual total, HLF_RWL0_FI_NFI. The SS element, or Signal Designation, identifies the specific signal associated with the specified equipment. This fragment relies heavily on the ISA naming convention. While this ISA system does identify the nature of the signal, it does not identify the location or the type of equipment being referred to. The ISA tagging system was illustrated in Section 5.1 previously. Some examples of signal designation fragments are shown below: RWP3_SS_SRC MIV2_EV_DON AST1_LS_ALH BSP2_PF_ZRM

B.1.2  Tagname Fragment Dictionaries As stated earlier, the TSNC uses a four fragment system in which each fragment identifies one part of the complete tagname. A series of ‘dictionaries’ may prove useful in constructing tagnames for a SCADA system. As the system is designed and developed, additional fragments may be added to these dictionaries. At the end of the project, there will be a complete set of listings for all fragments of the tagnames used in the SCADA project. Each of the four fragments or elements of the tagname will have a list of assigned phrases or definitions. The following subsections contain a series of dictionaries for the tagname fragments, based upon the water treatment plant application. Of course, this system may be modified and tailored in any way desired; this is meant as a design methodology and provide a starting point for tagname construction.
