OF BONES

AND

JOINTS.

PROFESSOR OEHLECKER, of H a m b u r g , has provided a work on tuberculosis of bones and joints, which is so generously provided with illustrations as to be a veritable atlas. 1 T h e work is divided into two parts. In the first is provided a full and helpful discussion of pathological features, clinical manifestations, prognostic points, methods of treatment, and like general considerations. An extensive section is devoted to " R 6 n t g e n u n t e r s u c h u n g , " and there is a good account of sun and light t r e a t m e n t , in which Rollier's development of heliotherapy is discussed. T h e r e are illustrations of various forms of mercurial v a p o u r and q u a r t z l a m p s for the conduct of artificial light treatment. Good accounts are also given of orthopaedic and general surgical proceedings, hyperaemic measures a d v o c a t e d by Bier, and the so-called specific t r e a t m e n t by various forms of tuberculins and other antigens. T h e second p a r t of the volume, which is furnished with a large n u m b e r of instructive illustrations, deals in detail with tuberculous lesions as met with in the various bones and joints of the body. As m i g h t be expected, a considerable n u m b e r of the figures relate to lesions in young subjects. T h e whole w o r k is manifestly based on wide experience and a thorough study of all aspects of the subject. W e c o m m e n d this serviceable m o n o g r a p h to the consideration of all medical advisers having to deal with cases of so-called " s u r g i c a l " tuberculosis, and p a r t i c u l a r l y to those w h o desire direction in modern orthopaedic and other measures for the relief and arrest of t u b e r c u l o u s processes in early life.
