IN PULMONARY

73 TUBERCULOSIS.

Dr. M. L. K i n d b e r g has contributed to the collection Mddecine et C h i r u r g i e P r a t i q u e series a serviceable little h a n d b o o k on collapsetherapy. 1 I t is clearly written, and will be found a useful h e l p to those who w a n t a general idea of the value of artificial p n e u m o t h o r a x or collapsotherapy. After describing the indications and contra-indications the a u t h o r gives a v e r y concise account of the technique of the treatment. T h e a p p a r a t u s r e c o m m e n d e d is t h a t designed by Kuss, ~nd is one t h a t is v e r y p o p u l a r in F r a n c e , but, after all, t h e choice of a p p a r a t u s is of less i m p o r t a n c e t h a n the a b i l i t y to use it. I n dealing with the complications, the a u t h o r has wisely given most space to consideration of pleural effusion, for this is by far t h e most c o m m o n and i m p o r t a n t complication. I f we count as effusion those cases where X - r a y e x a m i n a t i o n shows a small puddle of fluid, the a u t h o r finds that 8o per cent. of his cases h a v e this complication, and m y own experience is e x a c t l y similar. T h e s e transient and small effusions are often overlooked, however, and are of no importance. T h e short c h a p t e r on oleothorax is most interesting. T h e author, w h i l s t a d m i t t i n g that this method is too new to allow a final j u d g m e n t of its vfflue, feels t h a t so far it has proved disappointing. T h i s is an opinion with which most will agree. One c h a p t e r is given up to the consideration of surgical t r e a t m e n t , a n d reference is here m a d e to t h o r a c o p l a s t y , phrenicotomy, and division of adhesions. F i n a l l y , the a u t h o r discourses fully on the conclusions he has d r a w n as to the value of collapsotherapy. T h e book will be of value to anyone who wants a brief b u t clear and m o d e r a t e l y written account of this m e t h o d of treatment. L . S. T. BURRELL, M . D . , F . R . C . P .

OF THE

UPPER

AIR PASSAGES.

Dr. M a n a s s e has w r i t t e n an interesting m o n o g r a p h in which he records his experience in extensive a n a t o m i c a l e x a m i n a t i o n s of cases of tuberculosis in t h e upper air passages. 2 H e finds t h a t few of the large n u m b e r of publications regarding tuberculosis in this part of the body discuss the pathological a n a t o m y in proportion to the clinical a p p e a r a n c e s and s y m p t o m s : hence his work. At the outset he says that section should a l w a y s be made t h r o u g h the whole larynx, whether frontal or sagittal. H e discusses his s u b j e c t u n d e r the following heads : (i) Infiltration ; (2) ulceration ; (3) perichondritis ; (4) turnouts (tuberculomata). O n the old question of the w a y in w h i c h tubercle enters ttie l a r y n x t h e author's opinion is t h a t the m u c o u s glands are p r i m a r i l y affected, and the extension to other tissues is b y w a y of the l y m p h vessels, T h e w o r k is profusely and excellently illustrated.
