Average tunnel advance was approximately lira/day. Field data are used to determine the effects of the major independent variables of mechanical rock boring on tunnel boring machine performance in hard rock. Variables include load per cutter path, cutter path spacing, cutter dullness (ie cutter edge width) and cutterhead RPM. The effect of rock strength on the cutter rolling forces and machine torque is discussed.
