Reports tunnelling for an irrigation project in south-eastern Peru, involving 37 tunnels of varying length, most of them at 3700m above sea level.

silts and limestone boulders ~hich have a tendency to creep. Excavation and shotcreting of the frozen rock are described briefly. 796101 DECIDING ON THE EXCAVATION .METHOD FOR A TUNNEL FROM THE GEOLOGISTS' POINT OF VIEW Wanner, H Undergrouni Space, VJ, N6, May-Jur~ 1979,

P293-296 796095 EARTHQUAKE STABILITY OF ROCK TUNNELS DC~ing, C H Tunn Tunnlg, VII, NS, June 1979, P15-20 Forty-one ca;~es of observed damage to rock tunnels from earthquake motions amd movement are compared to calculated peak surface motions to determine thresholds of damage. No damage was observed below calculated surfsce accelerations of 0.2g. A critical assessment of the study is employed to establish what research is necessary to refine analytical approaches. Auth.

796o96 COPING WITH DIFFICULT GROUND ON THE FULLFACE MECHANISED 'TUNNEL DRIVES AT KIELD~R Nicholson, K Tunn Tunnlg, VII, NS, June 1979, P55-57 Describes 3 methods used in bad ground in the K l e l d ~ Tunnels, northern Er~amd. (i) A top heading is driven from the s u p ~ platfc~nn over the roof shield to the face of the machine-cut tunnel, axcavating all loose rock and installing temporary arch supports. (2) Construction of a D-section at the face. (3) Conventional drive in front of the machine. None of these methods necessitated the withdrawal of the tunnelling machine.

Particular reference is made to papers on the mud shield process, on tunnel design, environments, anl contractual practices. See also: 796092

Discusses the limits of mechanical boring in terms of rock mass drillability, rock abrasiveheSS, bracing of the boring machine, stability of the rock mass, deformation of the tunnel and extreme conditions of temperature, gas or water, amd gives examples from Swiss practice where these limits have been exceeded. 796102 TUNNEL STABILITY BY THE METHOD OF CONVERGENCECONFINEmeNT. SPECIAL ISSUE (IN FRENCH) Tunnels Ouvrages Souterr, N32, March-April 1979, P65-168 Comprises the Proceedings of the AFTES semlnsr on 26th Oct 1978. lucl~des: General report, Comments on the general report, CO~nents on the fundamental rules for the application of the method, Comments on the method, Deformation of the face and determination of the cohesion of the rock mass, Practical consequences for the conception and dimensioning of the tunnel support. 796103 SYSTEM OF UED~GROU~D WATER ZN A KARSrlC COOWTRY AND THE TUNNELS EXCAVATED FOR WATER RUNNING TO ATHENS (IN FRENCH) Marinos, P G In: Proc World Congress on Water in Mining and Underground Works (SIAMOS-78), Grarg_d~, Spain, 18-22 Sept 1978, VI, P~1-462. Publ Granada: Asoclacion Nacional de !r~enleros de Minas, 1978 Describes the project to construct an aqueduct from Mornos Dam in central Greece to Athens, which requires tunnelling through limestone with major surface karst features. The influence of hydrogeological features on tnnral construction amd operation is discussed.

796100 RAILWAY TUNNEL, BORN Konz, P; Garbe, L; Aerni, K Consult Engr, vh2, Ng, Sept 1978, P42-43 Reports the use of grourzl freezing in the constructlon of a double track, 810m long tunnel in S w i t z e r l ~ . In the portal zones of the tunnel there are large volumes of loose clayey

Reports measurements of hydraulic conductivity in the rock mass a~d of compressive strength in the tunnels which are part of an tundergrour~ power plant. A relationship is shown between hydraulic conductivity and the prevailing stress distribution in the rock mass.
