Two acute cases KLAUS-HENNING GYPSER, MD Abstract Two acute cases are reported. The first gave verification of a symptom which occurred in the proving of Nux vomica, i.e. 'pain in forehead extending to root of nose'. The second demonstrated the action of Manganum after Rhus toxicodendron had failed which was seemingly indicated. This was an astonishing result, because the symptoms of Manganum repertorized with the aid of Boenninghausen's Therapeutic Pocket Book could not be clearly identified in the materia medica. Apparently Boenninghausen was right when he said that his Pocket Book 'opened a way into the wide fields of combinations'. Case 1 Female, aged 44. Influenza. Temperature 39.3 ~ in the evening. Chilliness in back, agg. on slightest uncovering. Aversion to drinks during chill. Retching on rising from bed, but cannot vomit. Watery coryza, agg. at night. Cough with white expectoration. Pain in forehead extending to root of nose. I consulted Boger-Boenninghausen's Repertory, a book I consider very valuable in acute, feverish conditions because the concomitants and modalities of the chapters 'Chill', 'Heat', and 'Sweat' are far better represented than in Kent's Repertory. N A U S E A A N D VOMITING, Agg., rising from bed (p. 319): Caps., Cina, Led., NUXV., Old., Sil., Stap., Ver-a. N A U S E A A N D VOMITING, Retching and Gagging, empty, ineffectual, etc. (p. 311): NUX-V., Sil., VER-A. FEVER, Partial chill, on back (p. 833): Nux-v., Sil. , Ver-a. CHILL, Agg., uncovering (p. 845): NUX-V., SIL. CHILL, Concomitants, thirstlessness (p. 851852): Nux-v. NOSE, Discharges, watery (p. 181-182): Nux-v. C O R Y Z A , Time, night (p. 196): Nux-v. The symptom I did not repertorize, 'pain in forehead extending to root of nose', was looked up under Nux-v. in Hahnemann's Materia Medica Pura: No 63: 'Tearing pain in the head to the root of the n o s e . . . ' No 74: 'Drawing movement here and there in
the forehead towards the root of the nose.' The whitish expectoration could not be found in the materia medicas on the subject. Nux vomica CM, one dose, was prescribed. The following morning the temperature was down to 37.5 ~ in the evening 37.4 ~ Headache, retching, chilliness and coryza were gone. Now she had thirst. The whitish expectoration continued for some days. The symptom, 'pain in forehead extending to root of nose', can be marked as verified in the materia medica. Case 2 Male, aged 39. Awful, unspecified headache with acute toothache. Left upper molar teeth, stitching pain, agg. at night, preventing sleep, agg. while biting teeth together, agg. when lying on the left (painful) side, amel. by warm water. Repertorization was carried out with Boenninghausen's Therapeutic Pocket Book. Teeth, Molars (p. 60): Mang., Rhus. Sensations, Sticking, internally (p. 183-184): Mang., RHUS. Aggravations, Night (p. 270): MANG., RHUS. Aggravation, Biting Teeth Together (p. 272): Mang., RHUS. Aggravations, Lying, On Side, Painful (p. 290291): Mang., RHUS. Amelioration, Food and Drink, Warm Water (p. 314): Mang., RHUS. Manganum and Rhus toxicodendron were the only remedies which ran through all rubrics.

AI., No 346: 'Tearing pain in the teeth, relieved by hot applications.' AI., p. 377: 'Agg., lying on affected side.' (this refers not especially to the teeth) R h u s t o x i c o d e n d r o n XM, one dose, was prescribed. After two days there was no amelioration. As there were no new symptoms, I tried M a n ganurn, without much confidence and in spite of the fact that I could not discover any clear simi-
