U K f i r m takes over Q u a l c o r p Qualcorp Inc of Connecticut, USA, has been taken over by Staveley Industries. The agreement means that Qualcorp Systems and Qualcorp Aerospace Systems (formerly Automation / Sperry) eq u ipment will be marketed through the Staveley network, including the newly launched Airscan noncontacting ultrasonic
equipment. The takeover will also mean that the recent marketing arrangement between Hocking NDT and Qualcorp will probably be dissolved.

Thickness gauges to be marketed Two thickness gauges developed by the National NDT Centre at Harwell, UK, are now being marketed by Industrial Ultrasound of Southampton.
A-scans are collected and averaged to overcome the low signal-to-noise ratio of the EMAT signal. The instrument costs approximately £10000 in the UK.
Agreement to manufacture an EMAT thickness gauge was signed in the week before the Materials Testing show. The instrument was developed in association with the Canadian Electrical Association and is designed to measure the thickness of oxidized steel plates or pipes, particularly when surrounded by porous combustion products like those found on heat exchanger pipes in coal or oil-fired boilers. The EMAT gauge avoids the need to remove such coatings, which used to result in a reading taking 30 minutes to obtain.
A price of £6800 applies to a concrete thickness gauge for which a marketing agreement was signed about 3 months ago. The gauge aims to overcome the problem of measuring concrete thickness of up to 0.5 m from one side. A portable instrument, the Concordant, as it is called, can measure up to 512 mm thickness using four different frequency ranges.
Pulse vi deo t h e r m o g r a p h y to be e x p l o i t e d Exploitation of pulse video thermography, a system developed at the National NDT Centre, Harwell, UK, is the aim of an agreement signed with Rank Taylor Hobson of Leicester, UK. Announced at the Materials Testing exhibition in March, the agreement allows Rank Taylor Hobson to exploit the patent held by Harwell. The firm intends to supply complete systems including thermographic imager, heat source and computer processor. The firm says that one order has already been placed, with two more imminent. Initially the equipment is expected to be used as a research tool, primarily in the aerospace and automobile industries, for use in inspection of advanced composites and thin metal structures.
