2001 m e m b r a n e conference The North American Membrane Society (NAMS) has announced the first call for papers for its 12th annual meeting, which takes place on ! 5 - 2 0 May next year in Lexington, Kentucky, USA. The meeting will tbcus on recent developments in the structure, function and applications of synthetic membranes and the biological/synthetic membrane interlace. Session topics include: reverse osmosis / nanofiltration; ultrafiltration/ microfiltration; pervaporation/ vapour permeation; gas separation; environmental applications; inorganic men> branes; fouling; membrane modelling; fuel cell membranes; and facilitated transport/mei;qbrane contactors, In addition, a series of plenary lectures from experts in the tld& of membrane materials, biological membrane structure and function, and synthetic biological membrane interlace are planned. Several membrane-related workshops will take place at the NAMS meeting on 19-20 May. Planned are workshops include Membrane based Bioseparation
and Sensing; Membrane Formation and Materials; and Membranes in Pharmaceutical Applications. Abstracts for the meeting must be submitted electronically and received no later than 15 February 2001. Several of graduate student awards will be presented at the meeting. To be considered for an award, a graduate student must be the first author of the abstract, and on submission of the abstract you must indicate that it is to be considered for an award. Registration before 21 March 2001 costs US$ 350 for NAMS members; $415 t})r non-members; and S125 t})r students. Alter that date, registration increase to $500 for members; $565 fi)r non members; and $225 for students. For ,/i, rther i?jormation

Nanotechnology moves into Europe NanoWorld Projects Corp, NewYork, USA, has opened a European subsidiary called NanoWorld International SpA, and is based in Turin, Italy. The new company was set up to enable the company to work more closely with strategic partners located in Europe. Further, NanoWorld says that its research centre in Turin can now dedicate itself exclusively to nanutechnology research and development now
Filtration+Separation
that the subsidiary is up and running. Nanotechnology is a relatively new field involving engineering at the molecular level. According to NanoWorld, the technology has the potential to transtk~rm current manufacturing processes in the production of filtration systems. NanoWorld uses a patented dynamic thin laminar flow (DTLF) process to produce single or multi layer films for various applications.
Dutch m e m b r a n e acquisitions Dutch energy and water utility Nunn is expected to acquirc at least a 95% share in watcr purification specialist Norit NV, The Netherlands, in a private transaction worth C151 million (US$128 million). The announcement tollows negotiations with some of Norit's shareholders including Purification Holding BV, Orange Fund, and Delta Llovd. Shares are expected to be acquired at C l l . 5 ($9.8) per ordinary share. Norit will continue to operate under its current name and identity and members of the board will remain with the company. In addition they have agreed to stay remain with Norit tbr at least four years. Nuon also intends to terminate Norit's listing on the Euronext Official Market (Amsterdam) during 2001. However, pledges made to holders of preferred stock will be upheld. Norit supplies water purification products such as active carl)on and membranes
to the tood and drink, and water industries. According to Norit the alliance with Nuon will boost its international market position. Further the combination of Nuon' international orders and Norit's membrane technology is anticipated to result in a strong position in the Dutch and international water market.
In Filtration +Separation, November 2000 (p.4) we reported that Norit had signed a letter of intent to purchase the membrane activities of Stork Friesland, headquartered in Gorredijk, The Netherlands. The acquisition has been completed for an undisclosed sunl.
