54A 852115 Plane and spatial finite element calculations in tunnelling (In German and Engfish) Schikora, K Tunnel N3, Aug 1984, P158-161 The soil-tunnel bearing system is examined using finite element analyses. 852116 Igneous and sedimentary strata combine to hinder Saguling tunnellers Martin, D Tann Tuanlg VI6, N9, Sept 1984, P46-47 The Lot I1 contract to construct an intake structure, drive headrace tunnels and excavate surge tanks and penstocks for the Saguling hydroelectric power project in Indonesia has had to overcome geological problems. Two types of geological areas exist; upstream is a hard agglomerate and lava and downstream is hard sedimentary or volcanic rock with the centre of the drive in mudstone and sandstone. Both areas were driven by drill and blast in the hard rock sections. Roof support in the mudstone and sandstone was provided by 3m long bolts. 852117 UK may become third force in hydraulic drifters Martin, D Tann Tuanlg V16, N9, Sept 1984, P57-58 A report from 2 sites where hydraulic drills are being used to excavate tunnels: the Vietas Hydroelectric Project and the Renstrom Mine, both in Sweden. 852118 Northwest extension of the MBTA Red Line in Boston Keville, F M; Sutcliffe, H Underground Space V8, N4, 1984, P253-258 Details of the lowering of the alignment of the 5.6km extension and the construction of four new underground stations are described. The tunnels were excavated by drill and blast methods. Soft ground tunnelling in glacial till caused difficulties at shallow depth. 852119 Tuneling in residual soil and rock Akins, K P; Abramson, L W Proc 6th Rapid Excnation and Tum~liag Couferenee, Chicago, 12-16 June 1983 V1, P3-24. Pub/New York: AIME, 1983 Outlines the specifications and capabilities of a laboratory rotary cutting machine, for use in research and development in improving the design and operation of mechanical tunnel, raise and shaft boring equipment. 852122 Laboratory disc cutting studies in medium and hard rocks Temporal, J; Snowdon, R A; O'Reilly, M P Proc 6th Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference, Chicago, 12-16 June 1983 V1, P131-156. Publ New York. AIME, 1983 Mechanical cutting characteristics, using disk cutters, of rocks with compressive strengths up to 340MPa are described. Experiments determining the effect on cutting performance of the hydraulic stiffness of tunnelling machines are presented. Results are analysed and discussed in the context of full-face tunnelling machines. 852123 Tunnel excavation in Alaska using high speed equipment Provost, A G; Ness, M S Proc 6th Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference, Chicago, 12-16 June 1983 VI, P227-237. Publ New York. AIME, 1983 High speed drilling, mucking and hauling equipment was used in driving approximately 2.16km of lower power tunnel in quartz diorite for the Tyee Lake Hydroelectric Project, Alaska, USA. Average tunnel advance was approximately lira/day. The quartz diorite was moderately competent and was driven bald-headed, though two shear zones required steel sets and bolts for stability. 852124 World record tunnemng project at Rnndfontein Estates Gold Mine Halasz, L S Proc 6th Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference, Chicago, 12-16 June 1983 VI, P253-281. Publ New York: AIME, 1983

Residual soil and rock tunnels data in the USA is compared to transit tunnelling experience in Atlanta, Georgia and tunnels in other soil and rock conditions.

The techniques implemented at gandfontein Estates to develop twin-haulages at high speed are presented, which led to world record advance for twin-end muitiblast cyclic development in hard abrasive quartzites.

Field data are used to determine the effects of the major independent variables of mechanical rock boring on tunnel boring machine performance in hard rock. Variables include load per cutter path, cutter path spacing, cutter dullness (ie cutter edge width) and cutterhead RPM. The effect of rock strength on the cutter rolling forces and machine torque is discussed.

The development of boulder crushing equipment and an automatic pipe jacking system for the slurry shield method and their application are indicated. 852126 New development in bentonite shield tunneling Becker, C Proc 6th Rapid ExcamLtion and Tunneling Conference, Chicago, 12-16 June 1983 V1, P318-328.
