The City of Pico Rivera has been awarded for overall water quality by a panel of international water experts at the 10th Annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting & Competition. The event is the largest watertasting competition in the world involving more than 100 participating cities from throughout the US, Italy, Germany, Norway, Bosnia and France. For the first time apparently, all three top finishers were from California.
Singapore Government authorities say that the use of desalination techniques and water conservation programs should safeguard the country against future water supply problems. The private sector is being encouraged to bid for the supply contracts, and the government says it will commit to the purchase of processed wa~er for a number of years. For now, large scale users are being urged by the authorities to adopt more effective recycling schemes. USA WaterPartners International has launched a public awareness campaign that includes the www.water.org website, where educators and others can download complete lesson plans and information related to global water supply issues. The turnkey One Day for Water kits include activities, formulas for tracking water usage, a quiz, and links to other water-related sites. WaterPartners began as a benefit dinner which was organized to support a safe drinking water project in Honduras. Today, the group has six US chapters, a $200 000 annual budget, and has successfully funded 35 projects. Mozambique Despite government requests that flood victims should stay put in aid camps until river water levels receded, tens of thousands struck out early to try and reconstruct their homes and lives. A combination of months of rain, and prolonged storms, left the country stricken by high waters. Almost half a million inhabitants had to be evacuated, and damages are estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars. However, if rivers burst their banks again, the government warned escape efforts would be severely hampered and the ability to retrieve survivors restricted.

The American Water Works Association has responded to criticism by the Campaign for Safe and Affordable Water about consumer water quali~/reports issued by US water utilities. The AWWA says that as a result of utilib, commitment to the pubtic's right to know, American consumers are beHer informed than ever before about the qualily of their tap water. The United Nations has warned that the number of people with restricted access to good water supplies is rising rapidly. Thousands of children die every day as a result. According to the UN report, the situation could be potentially be redressed if proper, local water development projects were initiated, but laments the fact that instead, a widespread business as usual approach seems to prevail. A system to clean and reuse almost 400 000 gallons of water per day will be installed at Fieldab Farms', Georgia, poultry processing plant by Praxair and Zentox Corporation. Fieldale Farms, produces over thirteen million pounds of chicken weekly. The plant was facing local water restrictions that required them to cut usage by hundreds of thousands of gallons each day.
