ULg leads programme for testing cryogenic seal on rocket engine’s liquid oxygen tubopump
T
he European Space Agency (ESA) has selected the Université de Liège (ULg), Belgium, to conduct tests on the dynamic seal on the liquid oxygen turbopump that is being used in the newgeneration cryogenic VINCI engine, which will equip the top stage of future versions of the Ariane launcher. The ESA test-bench, located at the ULg cryogenic site, represents an investment of more than E3 million. Operational and certified since the beginning of 2014, this bench now enables an important test campaign to begin, in partnership with the Italian company Avio, which is responsible for developing the seal on the VINCI engine turbopump. The ULg’s industrial chemistry laboratories, located at the university’s Sart Tilman campus, are equipped with a secure area used to conduct certain high-risk tests – involving high pressures, and the use of pure liquid oxygen or oxygen gas. The area, which is entirely enclosed, covers around 4000 m2. The 100-m2 test-bench is based in this area. For more than 30 years several hundred tests have been carried out on different elements, for example, turbopump valves, seal casings and 16
