WATER & WASTEWATER ULTRAPURE WATER SYSTEMS TO REACH US$4BN BY 2009 By 2009 the market for ultrapure water systems (UPW) will be US$4 billion worldwide, twice the size of the 200l market says McIlvaine in its latest forecast Ultrapure Water World Markets. UPW systems provide the contaminant free water used in human injectables, super critical coal-fired boiler steam systems, and in chip cleaning in the semiconductor industry. The largest segment is the semiconductor industry, McIllvaine says. UPW systems sales will reportedly exceed US$1.7 billion in 2009, with much of the growth coming from Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and China. The pharmaceutical purchases of UPW systems continue to grow at a steady 8% per year and will exceed US$300 million worldwide in 2009. Within this sector, biotech is growing much faster than the total pharmaceutical UPW systems market, McIlvaine says. Global biotechnology industry revenues grew by 17% in 2004 to US$55 billion, led by the US with US$43 billion in revenues. India’s biotech industry will reportedly generate sales of US$1 billion this year, up from about US$700 million in 2004, and is on track to increase sales to US$4.8 billion by 2009. There is a big transition in the power segment where sales of UPW systems for coal-fired boilers are rapidly increasing, the company says. Whereas sales of UPW systems for Gas Turbine Combined Cycle (GTCC) have plummeted and are now
slowly recovering, in 2009 there will be UPW systems purchases for coal-fired boilers exceeding US$1 billion, McIlvaine says. This compares to only US$50 million which will be spent for UPW systems for gas turbines. The latest super critical coal-fired boilers deliver higher efficiency and lower greenhouse gas emissions. But with the high temperatures and pressures, the water purity requirements are greater than with sub-critical boilers. McIlvaine also says that in 2009 purchases of instruments and controls for UPW systems will exceed US$500 million, while purchases of membranes and membrane systems will reach US$600 million. Pump and valve purchases will exceed US$250 million. Significant purchases will be made for degasification, disinfection, ion exchange, storage and piping. DEGRÉMONT TO DBO WASTEWATER PLANT IN QATAR Degrémont is to design, build and operate for 10 years the Lusail sewage transfer and treatment system in Qatar. The plant will treat 60 000 cubic metres per day of wastewater, serving approximately 200 000 residents, and will come online in late 2007. It is Degrémont’s largest membrane biological reactor (MBR) wastewater treatment plant, and the first one in the Arabian Gulf. The contract includes the installation of more than 10 kms of transfer system from collection points near the Pearl-Qatar and Lusail residential developments to the sewage treatment
plant. The design, build, operate contract with the Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Co includes US$123 million for the design and the construction of the works and US$65 million for the 10 years of operation. The contract will be performed as a joint venture between Degrémont SA (for the sewage treatment works/ STW), Marubeni Corp (for the pumping stations and conveyor/SCT) and Mushrif Trading and Construction Co (for the civil engineering work). Zenon Environmental will supply its proprietary ZeeWeed membranes.
PULP & PAPER STORA ENSO IN JV WITH SHANDONG HUATAI PAPER Stora Enso has signed an agreement with Shandong Huatai Paper to form a publication paper company in China. The 83 million joint venture’s paper machine at Dongying in China’s Shandong province is planned to have an annual production capacity up to 200 000 tonnes of super-calendered (SC) magazine paper and other publication paper grades based on recovered fibre. Assembly of the production line will start in mid 2007. The paper machine is expected to start up in late 2007. Key components of the joint venture equipment are to be sourced from a machine formerly at Stora Enso’s Maxau Mill in Germany.
