Tenth ICA More details on the tenth International Congress on Acoustics from 6-16 July 1980 in Australia have been announced. The main proceedings will take.place at the University of New South Wales, in Sydney, Australia’s oldest city. A range of accommodation will be available at conveniently located hotels and also in university colleges on the campus. An equipment, materials and instrumentation exhibition will be held in conjunction with the congress, and visists to acoustic laboratories and other scientific facilities will be arranged. A full social programme, including a banquet, evening entertainment and excursions will complement technical sessions. The official overseas carrier for the congress is Quantas, and TransAustralia Airlines has been appointed official carrier within Australia. Satellite symposia have been arranged in Adelaide on 7-8 July 1980 on Engineering for Noise Control and

in Perth on 18-19 July 1980 on Basic Causes of Noise .Deafness. ‘Acoustics in the 1980s’ is the theme of the congress and it is hoped that it will provide opportunities for taking stock, appraising new initiatives in existing fields and exploring the areas in which new developments are likely. Invited papers will be presented by distinguished acoustical experts and there will be ample opportunity for the presentation of contributed papers. It is also planned to hold a series of workshops in which panels of experts will discuss progress in selected fields of interest. Ultrasonics

film wins award

‘Safe and Sound’ a documentary film sponsored by Action Research for the Crippled Child and produced by Video Arts Limited, has won the British Association Film Award 1978. The Award is given annually by the British Association for the Advancement of Science for the British film which makes the most effective presentation to a non-specialist audience of a scientific or technological subject. Those who attended the Ultrasonics International 77 conference may have seen the film there, which was shown to a packed house and was granted an enthusiastic reception.

Written and produced by Dr Robert Reid and directed by Julian Aston, ‘Safe and Sound’ illustrates some of the applications of science to medicine instanced by the use of ultrasonic techniques originally developed in engineering.
