806122 MEAsURIng] FOR FEED-BACK Habeni cht, H Consult Engr, V44, NI, Jan 1980, P46-50 Explains the geotechnical measurements required for the New Austrian Tunnelling Hethod. These ~Jre : convergence measurements, extensometer measurements, anchor loads, stresses in the gunite, loading on the tunnel arches and grourJ stresses. The instruments used are discussed. 806123 ~INDERGROUND OPTION Jacomb-Hood, E W Consult Engr, V43, N9, Sept 1979, P12-14 Briefly reviews topics discussed at tunnelling conferences held in Atlanta, Geergia, USA in 1979, and goes on to outline the Atlanta metro system now under construction. Geology, support requirements and construction techniques are discussed for one of the stations. $06124 ~
1979 Describes two-stage excavation through shales, limestones and sandstones with a faulted zone which affects about 400m of tunnel length. Ground treatment methods included chemical and cement grouting, and support was by metal laminar profiles lined with plate or mesh. $06125 ROA~ T~YNEL IN ~.NZRY SOFT 901L IN TERRACE DEPOSITS IN THE }DkRZ HOUNTAINS, GEP~kiANY Duddeck, H; Heister, D; werner, E In: Tunnelling '79, Proceedings of the 2nd Internation~l Symposium, London, 12-16 Harch ] 979, P205-215. 1979 Discusses the use of expanded precast ~mrticulated lining segments for construction in difficult ground, or for l}~-rge-span roofs, and the procedure of precutting slots using special equipment, to provide protection ~mgsinst ground mOvement prior to main excavation of the tunnel. The latter method was previously successful in hard ground, and is developed far soft ground by the injection of shotcrete into the slots. 806127 EXCAVATION OF E>~/dNsIVE GROUND FOP~MATION FOR THE SEI~%E" UNDERSEA TUNNEL PROJECT Hochida, Y In: Tunnelling '79, Proceedings of the 2nd Interrmtional Symposium, London, 12-16 Horch 1979, P220-239. Reports measures to combat soft, water-bearing rocks with high grour~ pressure in the underwater fault zones through which the tunnel has to pass. Extensive pregrouting from shafts, pilot and service tunnels, as well as in the main tunnel, was carried out. The tunnel cross-section was changed from horseshoe to circular, excavation was by the short benchcut method, and temporary support measures included yielding steel pipe, shotcrete, and rock bolts.

1979 Reports the use of ground freezing for tunnelling through 350m of moraine containing water-bearing silty-sandy inclusions. The effectiveness of the frozen arch is monitored by measurement of creep, frost heave, defernmtion and settlement. 806129 DRIVING AN 848M DIAMETER SEWER TUNNEL BY USE OF AN EARTH-PRESSURE BALANCING SHIELD Saito, T; Kobayashi, C E In: Tunnelling '79, Proceedings of the 2nd International Symposium, London, 12-16 March 1979, P295-304. 1979 This tunnel, 6.6km long and 2.6m finished diameter, is under construction in Lancashire for the bulk transfer of water between two rivers. Excavation was by shield drive in soft ground and then by drilling and blasting, with steel arches as initial rock support. Lining methods are also described, mass concrete being used, with steel ~ressure lining at each er~l of the tunnel.
