The journal now provides this avenue via these pages. It gives the executive of Council an opportunity to communicate with the members four times a year. It also provides an opportunity for members to announce events in their region and country, and I invite you to use this facility.

Emphasis on free papers of original work at the World Congresses The Brisbane World Congress of the IHPBA will highlight the opportunity for members to present their best original work. Plenary sessions of original work form the core of the programme in addition to concurrent sessions which do not clash with symposia. It is our belief that the future of any association can only be enhanced if original work is given ample opportunity for presentation. We hope that you will support this initiative.

Financial arrangements for World Congresses The organisers of the world congresses take large financial risks on behalf of the association. Consequently we have been determined to arrive at a formula which will diminish

the opportunity for financial profits for the Association to result from the meeting. These funds will ultimately result in the delivery of a greater benefit for the members.

Open governance From its outset, the IHPBA has been led by individuals elected to their positions by the membership. We have been fortunate that interest in the governance of the Association has been high and numerous members have offered their expertise and time to serve on committees and Council. In the last two issues of the journal, we have invited nominations for the various positions and again in this issue we repeat these notices. We hope and trust that these notices have given members ample opportunity, if they wish, to become involved in the affairs of their Association.

Membership All past and present members have now received their annual subscription notice. The next notice will be sent in June 2000. Only members who were financially current for 1999 and beyond will remain on the database. This will

Membership List Members have asked from time to time for a list of IHPBA members. We are endeavouring to provide this information in a booklet form, hopefully as a supplement of the journal. As a matter of policy, however, we cannot provide a mailing list to commercial companies or to members or institutions that wish to run conferences.
