Book review Unerwartete Todesfiille in Klinik und Praxis by Steffen Berg (ed.), Springer-Verlag, Berlin-Heidelberg, 1992, 275 pp. ISBN 3-540-55415-7 This book offers guidance in the extreme and borderline area of medical practice where the doctor is confronted with sudden and unexpected fatalities and comes into contact with medico-legal obligations and criminalistic questions. Published under the aegis of Professor Dr. Steffen Berg, one of the most experienced forensic scientists, it is an essential guideline for general and clinical practioners, students of clinical medicine, emergency services, as well as for specialized police officers. The text is by 27 authors who have a close and practical interest in clinical forensic medicine, especially in the investigation, diagnosis and classification of natural and unnatural death. This is a rather unpopular but nevertheless, unavoidable and extremely important task for all physicians. The book encompasses all the typical conditions and hazards concerning the circumstances of death and the scene of investigation. It becomes obvious that a detailed external investigation of the dead body is a prerequisite for an accurate diagnosis. However, in many cases an autopsy is the only means to clarify the case. The contents of the 27 chapters include, for example, unexpected death during diagnostic or therapeutic manipulations and complications - medical malpractice - sudden cardiac death - allergic reactions - intoxications (esp. drug abuse-related death) - sudden death at the wheel, during work, in custody and during sports - sudden death in infancy - brain-death, euthanasia - accidents, suicides and homicides. The scene, the circumstances and the findings on the dead body are described from a rather practical point of view which is easy to understand. An extensive bibliography and an index are included which makes this book a very useful guide in the field of death investigation and certification.
