Study highlights which companies are prospering in the post-recession market place
M
any company owners in the UK seals and gaskets industry are complaining about the scarcity of bank lending to businesses, but market analyst Plimsoll Publishing Ltd argues that the banks are right – many companies in the market are just not worth the risk. The latest ‘Plimsoll Industry Analysis – Seals & Gaskets’ highlights which companies are prospering in the post-recession market place, those set to be bought out and those heading for trouble – across the whole of the market and in the individual regions. It gives an instant performance rating on 230 companies and highlights those ripe for acquisition. Recent high profile failures in other sectors (namely the travel and construction sectors) show the danger of operating on micro-profit margins, and the same thing could be heading to the seals and gaskets industry in 2011, says Plimsoll. According to the firm, 114 companies in the market exist on low profit margins of less than 1.5%, with 71 of these making a loss. May 2011
in Park Ridge, Illinois, USA, has published the third edition of the ‘Basic Handbook of Lubrication’. Compiled and edited by STLE’s Alberta Section, the 360-page handbook covers some 30 lubrication topics with contributions from 25 authors. The technical material is oriented towards both newcomers to the lubrication industry and veterans, says the society. The follow-up to the out-of-publication second edition sells for $159 ($125 to STLE members). he 3rd European Conference on Tribology (ECOTRIB 2011) – arranged jointly with Viennano ‘11 – is scheduled to be held in Vienna, Austria, on 7–9 June 2011. Among the presentations that relate to sealing are the following: • Simulation of viscoelastic rod seals in conventional hydraulic actuators (R.F. Salant, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA); • Friction model for pneumatic seals (O. Heipl, RWTH Aachen University, Germany); • On the dynamics of rubber contacts (B. Happ, Universität Erfurt, Germany); • The optimization process of the hydrodynamic mechanical face seals with unaligned plane surfaces (N. Popa, University of Pite ti, Romania); • A two scale approach for mixed lubrication modelling: the case of lip sealings (M. Scaraggi, Politecnico di Bari, Italy); • Numerical study of three dimensional lubrication in radial lip seals (A. Tasora, Università degli Studi di Parma, Italy); • Optimal design of balancing grooves in hydraulic spool valves (T.-J. Park, Gyeongsang National University, Korea); • Stability analysis of a four-lobe journal bearing lubricated with micropolar fluids (B. Chetti, Centre Universitaire de Khemis Miliana, Algeria); and
IN BRIEF DuPont increases price of resins, polyamides and fluoroelastomers DuPont Performance Polymers SA of Geneva, Switzerland, reports that it is increasing the price of various resins, polyamides and fluoroelastomers because costs continue to escalate. The firm’s Zytel nylon resins, Zytel HTN high-performance polyamides, Delrin acetal grades and Hytrel TPC-ET are being increased by E0.25/kg. The price of Viton fluoroelastomers and Viton Free Flow products is rising by E2.00/kg. Tutorial covers measurement of flatness and squareness UK-based Taylor Hobson Ltd, which specialises in surface and form metrology, has created a tutorial that covers the measurement of flatness and squareness. On a lot of roundness systems it is possible to measure flatness, says the company. This is done by rotation of the gauge such that stylus deflection is in a vertical (]-axis) direction (this applies equally to both upper and lower surfaces). The spindle movement and data-collection methods are the same as those used in the roundness mode. Flatness can be analysed by quantifying deviations from a least squares reference plane – where the areas above and below the plane are equal and are kept to a minimum separation. Flatness is calculated as the highest peak-to-valley normal to this reference plane. The full tutorial is available from the company’s Web-site. 0RUH LQIRUPDWLRQ hobson.com

Federal-Mogul opens aftermarket distribution centre in Madrid Federal-Mogul Corp has opened an aftermarket distribution centre in Madrid, Spain. Covering a surface area of over 8000 m, it will serve the entire Spanish aftermarket. The US company says that it will enable it to strengthen its position in Spain – a market that is growing in strategic importance in Europe. The country accounts for nearly 10% of the firm’s European aftermarket business. Patent awarded for in-place leak sealing technology for pipes Pipe Restoration Technologies Llc has been awarded a patent (US 7 858 149) by the US Patent and Trademark Office for its ePIPE technology which provides an internal barrier coating and seals leaks in pipes while they remain in place. This patent covers pipes that are used to carry potable water and natural gas, and used for fire sprinkler systems and drains.
