~,RA Outline of solutions available for the ~esign of raft foundations. 5figs,Refs. CSIRO ,AUST .DIV .APPL.G E O M ~ .TECH.PA~, N25,1976,16P. An analysis of existir~ methods for the design of raft foundations is presentecl. In the main, existing methods make use of elastic half space or simplified elastic sup. porting systeam. The development of a metho~ capable of analysing cross anisotropic layered systems provides a -~-ns for a more rational analysis of raft foundations. Auth.

Slopes s~ UPADRYAY,RP The i m ~ t of working slope angles on open-pit mining economics. M.S .THESIS,UNIV .ARIZONA, USA, 1975. A pit-slope economics model is develope~ to analyze the economic impact of steepening t h e working slope angle in an open-pit mining operation. The analysis is based on the benefits and costs of the steeper slopes. The main benefits of the steeper working slopes lie in the del~el stripping of the waste, wheras the costs ere mainly d~e to the failure of pit wall. The concept of probabilities of failure is utilized to compute the cost of failure d~e to steeper slopes. Auth.
