In t h e d i s c u s s i o n t h a t followed, t h e p a n e l a g r e e d t h a t t h e few e x i s t i n g a p p l i c a t i o n s (gas s e p a r a t i o n s for n i t r o g e n p r o d u c t i o n , d e w a x i n g , U F a n d RO for wastewaters) were a small but promising beginning, a n d it is i n e v i t a b l e t h a t v e g e t a b l e oil r e f i n i n g in t h e 2 1 s t c e n t u r y will l o o k q u i t e d i f f e r e n t from t o d a y ' s p r o c e s s . However, n o m e m b r a n e c o m p a n i e s w e r e in t h e e x h i b i t i o n , a n d t h e r e w a s o n l y o n e p e r s o n from a m e m b r a n e c o m p a n y in t h e a u d i e n c e . To m a k e t h i s a p p l i c a t i o n t a k e off, t h e y n e e d to b e a w a r e of t h e v a s t o p p o r t u n i t i e s in t h i s i n d u s t r y (for e x a m p l e , s e e a r t i c l e in F a t s a n d Oils I n t e r n a t i o n a l (UK), 10(6), 2 8 - 3 8 , 1994). F o r t h e fiscal y e a r e n d e d M a r c h 31, 1996, T h e Division h a s r e v e n u e s of a p p r o x i m a t e l y U S $ 2 7 0 million. A p p r o x i m a t e l y 6 4 % w a s g e n e r a t e d in N o r t h A m e r i c a , 2 5 % in E u r o p e , t h e M i d d l e E a s t a n d Africa, a n d 11% Pacific Rim.
