A GLASS fibre reinforced polyurethane from Bayer plc, Newbury, UK, has been chosen to manufacture the hoods of Finnish snow scooter manufacturer Bombardier-Nordtrac Oy’s latest model because unlike many materials it does not become brittle at temperatures below freezing point. According to Bayer, Bayflex 110 maintains its high impact strength over a very broad temperature range and has excellent inherent rigidity as a result of its 20% glass fibre content. In contrast to other plastics that use glass fibre mat, the part is
produced by mixing and finely grinding the glass fibres directly into the raw material components. In addition, an additive within the polyurethane formulation allows self-release from the mould and is said to give a high quality surface finish to the mouldings.
