In brief NuSil Technology, a manufacturer of siliconebased materials for healthcare, aerospace, electronics and photonics, has appointed Huntsman Quimica Brasil Ltda, a subsidiary of Huntsman Corp, as its exclusive distributor of products for the electronics industry in Brazil. In his new role at EES, Stern will lead the launch and market expansion of the company’s Ecos LifeLink microutility product in Africa, India and developing nations. “Andrew’s proven background in business development implementing renewable power systems to solve significant human and environmental problems make him well equipped to lead our global launch of the Ecos LifeLink,” said Dennis McGuire, president and CEO of Ecosphere. www.ecospheretech.com Swedish construction group Skanska AB said it has won an order worth US$1.04 billion from New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) to construct a drinking water plant in the city. The contract is connected to the Croton Water Filtration Plant in New York. The total contract amount is valued at US$1.3 billion, of which Skanska’s share is 80%. Skanska’s assignment includes construction and installation work. The plant is being built on four levels underground. Some 200,000 m3 of concrete and 27,000 tons of reinforcing steel are expected to be used. www.skanska.com

Food and beverage membrane market to reach US$230 million The membrane technology market for food and beverage processing will reach US$230 million, in the next five years, according to a new report available from ReportBuyer.com.
Investment in food and beverage membranes is on the rise.
The report, which looks at reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF), ultra filtration (UF), and microfiltration (MF), as well as dead-end UF/MF filtration, suggests that membrane sales to food and beverage processors, which was worth an estimated market value of US$185 million in 2006, is forecast to rise at an average annual growth rate of about 4.6% during the next five years. Wastewater treatment will continue to be the primary pollution prevention focus for food and beverage processors. Another industry trend for minimising waste and improving the bottom line is converting food byproducts to valueadded products. Many of these conversion activities that offer

Acquisition of Pall medical filter company Biopharmaceutical giant Myriad has reached an agreement to acquire 100% of the issued share capital, and shareholders loan accounts, of Filterworks (Pty) Ltd (Filterworks), for R13 million. Filterworks, which is the medical filter business of Pall Europe Limited in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa from Pall South Africa (Pty) Ltd. was incorporated for the purpose of acquiring these business in one package. Pall Corp has been operating in South Africa for 20 years directly through Pall South Africa (Pty) Ltd.
Myriad says that acquiring Filterworks will complement Myriad’s product range by helping it provide a holistic solution supplying a package including ventilators or anesthetic machines, Pall filters, clinical support and training. Moreover, Pall filters can be incorporated as part of an intravenous solution with Myriad’s ICU, Manta and Arcomed biopharmaceutical product ranges.

US$14 million contract for Peerless Peerless Mfg Co has been awarded a contract valued at approximately US$14 million for the design and supply of separation equipment for multiple compressor stations a gas transmission pipeline project in India. These separators will remove solids and liquids from the gas to protect the compressor and its associated equipment. The equipment is scheduled for delivery in the second and third quarters of fiscal year 2008.
