Chinexhibition shows market potential
US$3.9 billion sedimentation and centrifugation markets A recent report from the Mcllvaine Company says that next year US$3.9 billion will be spent on the purchase of new equipment to separate solids from liquids using sedimentation and centrifugation technologies. Mcllvaine noted that these revenues will be dispersed among 5,000 product, industry and geographical segments. In the report “Sedimentation & Centrifugation World Markets 1996-2000” Mcllvaine predicts that the big three economies: US, Japan and Germany will only account for 25 % of the total orders in 1999. While these three countries will purchase 45 % of chemical industry sedimentation and centrifugation equipment, Mcllvaine says their share will only be 32 % for municipal wastewater, 28 % for power and 13 % for mining. It is stated that the US remains the largest single market for most applications. However, its world share for all industry applications will drop to 20 % in 1999. The market share is 3oc

even smaller in some applications. For example, the order for sedimentation and centrifugation equipment for mining applications projected at only is US$61 million in 1999 in the US versus US$ 300 million for the “other Americas” segment. Mcllvaine reports that this is due to the heavy investment in new mines throughout South America. The US$150 million US investment in sedimentation and centrifugation equipment for municipal wastewater treatment plants in 1999 will be significant but is far less than the US$238 million that will be spent in Europe. The report says that German expenditures will only be US$21 million because nearly all German citizens already enjoy the benefits of secondary waste treatment. However, other European countries are not so fortunate and will have to invest large amounts. In the chemical industry, the US purchases for sedimentation and centrifugation equipment in 1999 will be US$78 million. This is far

less than the European projection of US$104 million. Even within Europe, the smaller countries offer a bigger market in the aggregate than does Germany. The French and UK markets together are bigger. Spanish, The Italian, Belgium, and Dutch markets combined are also larger than the German market. The emergence of developing markets is most apparent in Asia. The rapid growth of basic industries is generating a large increase in the purchase of separation equipment. China is the single largest market for sedimentation and centrifugation equipment in the power industry because of the large numbers of new coal-fired power plants which are in the planning and construction stage. In 1999 the US power market is projected at US$70 million whereas the Asian market is estimated at over US$lOO million. Mcllvaine Company, 2970 Maria Avenue, Northbrook, IL 60062, USA. Environment China ‘99, international exhibition for environmental technology for the Southern Coastal Zone of the PR China will convene for the third time from November 2 - 5, 1999. The location will be Guangzhou (former Canton), capital of the most economically dynamic Province - Guangdong. The bi-annual event is organised by Gima Exhibitions & Confer-ences, Hamburg, in co-operation with the Environmental Protection Bureau of Guangdong Province and the local environmental industry association. The exhibition will cover the following industries: waste water treatment, fresh water treatment, air purification technologies, solid and fluid waste treatment and recycling, soil treatment, renewable enermeasuring gies, and analysing equipment. It was reported that more than 18,000 trade visitors attended the exhibition in June 1997 in order to establish contacts with more than 130 participating companies from 14 countries. For the next Environment China, the organisers of the exhibition are expecting considerable growth nearly 200 participating companies. Gima says that a change in Chinese Prime Minister has effected a reconciliation of economic growth together with environmental protection leading to opportunities in China for environmental technologies.
