book reviews particular book as it makes hfformation available to those new to the subject area, and provides a focus for further more detailed reading using the references provided, The book manages to give a balanced view of this new technology by coveting the
benefits as well as the potential risks involved with the deliberate release of modified organisms. I would recommend this book to those scientists, students or laypersons who are not familiar with the current debate, but wish to obtain a balanced insight into the problems. The reasonable price
Useful, but not modern Modem Thin-Layer Chromatography

This book is divided into ten sections and covers most aspects of thin layer chromatography (TLC). The section coveting stationary phases is rather too long for the subject material (~100 pages with a further 30 pages for references), and fails to mention phases available for the separation of amino acid enantiomers. The section on mobile phases is also long - 35 pages including references, but it does contain many useful tables of solvent parameters.. Theoretical aspects of TLC are discussed effectively, but a knowledge of TLC is a prerequisite for working through this section. Following this, quantification in TLC is covered, including the use of densitometers, fluorescence
quenching and photodiode array detectors. Derivatization to detect compounds is also covered but not in great depth. The section is finished off with a brief description of validation procedures. The instrumentation section covers most of the equipment available to the thin-layer chromatographer and there are some fairly comprehensive descriptions. However, there is no mention of the instrumentation available for the detection of radioactivity. The techniques of over-pressutized liquid chromatography and centrifugal TLC are outlined in this section and outlined again in the section on special techniques. Perhaps some rationalization of these two sections would have avoided

repetition. The special techniques section also contains valuable and up-to-date information covering chiral separations. There are a further two sections covering mobile phase and time optimization, and the relatiomhip between TLC and column chromatography, which are both useful but hardly 'modem'. The final section 'perspectives in thinlayer chromatography' discusses the future progress of sample preparation, in situ reactions on TLC and automation of TLC. The book contains valuable information on TLC, although some is not particularly modem. There are a considerable number of spelling mistakes throughout the text and the fact that the special techniques section was labelled as continuous TLC at the top of each page caused some confusion. Considering some of the subject matter contained in the book, a price of $119.50 seems expensive.
