or expanding a quality assurance program. You can determine if your existing activities allow for the increasing sophistication of today’s medical knowledge and technology, the complexity of health care services, and the consumers’ awareness and expectations of the health care field. Health care financing and federal and local legislation are other factors that need to be taken into account. Although many authors have contributed to the text, unnecessary repetition has been avoided. From the chapters on how quality assurance has evolved to where it is going, the book is a stepby-step process of how to get started and how to proceed. The quality assurance program is designed not only to meet the needs of your facility, but to meet the requirements of various accrediting agencies. All levels of managers, practitioners, and staff will find this the perfect quality assurance reference book. The material for this book was organized to allow multiple entry points; each chapter can be used independently or in conjunction with other chapters. It is easy to find pertinent sections, case studies, practical examples, tables, figures, and exhibits. American Hospital Association, 840 N Lakeshore Dr, Chicago, IL 6061 I , 1985,482 pp, $27.50 paperback. This book focuses on planning based on creativity and positive action for today’s health care. I recommend it for anyone involved in planning a hospital’s strategy because it enhances one’s understanding of the planning process. The first edition needed to be updated because it did not address modern issues. The second edition includes marketing health services and entrepreneurship in hospitals, joint venturing with physicians, prospective payment system, DRGs and PPOs, budgetary cutbacks, and increasing competition. The book outlines the basics of strategic

planning and describeshow to implement the plan. It also explains how to obtain resources and make contingency plans. Nurse 5 Pocket Guide: Nursing Diagnoses with Interventions. Marilyn Doenges and Mary Moorhouse. F A Davis, 1915 Arch St, Philadelphia, PA 19103, 1985,296 pp, $1 1.95 paperback. This guide is designed for the nurse who already is familiar with the basics of nursing diagnoses. After obtaining the nursing history, assessment, and other data, a nurse can look up information on which to base the nursing diagnosis. The book has been made easy for a nurse to use. The nursing diagnoses have been alphabetized, and each includes a definition, diagnostic division, supporting data (etiology and defining characteristics), intervention and nursing priority, and desired patient outcome. Two features of the book that I liked were its size (4 x 6314 in), and a detachable plastic card that shows how to convert nursing problem statements into nursing diagnoses. This information is also printed on the back cover of the book. SISTER KANE,RHSJ, RN ADMINISTRATOR MACDONELL MEMORIAL HOSPITAL CORNWALL, ONTARIO, CANADA
