ding on ring size, there are 10, 12, 16 or 20 2~ in. diameter ports in the steel or cast aluminium ring. Major applications, say NRC, lie in high vacuum bell jar systems used in research in electronics, metals, space simulation, plastics and materials programmes. NRC Equipment Corp., 160 Charlemont Street, Newton, Massachusetts 02161, U.S.A. " Do-it-yourself " mass spectrometer conversions A E I, after announcing " considerably improved " performance of their MS 10 mass spectrometers, have stated that they wall send free kits by road, rail or air to all their customers so that they can make their own conversions. Originally designed for the simple and rapid analysis of gases and vapours up to molecular weight 100, the MS 10 can now scan up to 200 in two ranges, 2-45 and 36-100 : each range can now be scanned in 3½ mins.
• Automatic switch-off of machine's power supply if machine is unused for preset time period. • A 110 VAC outlet, which can be provided to control power automatically to an auxiliary vacuum pump or other accessories. • Speed controller and panel mount timers designed for local or remote location. The machines, are designed for mounting beneath a table top, with only the spinner shafts and push botton switches exposed. Optional models are available with higher speeds, larger substrate capacity, manual instead of automatic operation, an indicating tachometer and a vacuum pump. Thirty day trial consignments are possible. Headway Research Inc., Box 848-k, Richardson, Texas 75081,

Selection guide to organosilieon intermediates A batch of stainless steel assemblies being taken out of a production furnace at the British firm of Torvac Ltd., after being vacuum brazed-an example of some of the typical high temperature brazing and other heat treatments carried out economically in vacuum on a jobbing basis by this firm. The firm handles a wide variety of assemblies in stainless or refractory metals. The technique is stated to offer particular advantages when reliability and strength at high temperatures, coupled with a good finish and cleanliness inside and out, is desirable. It is said to be particularily advantageous for fabricated assemblies with internal passages to close tolerances : for example, rocket nozzle assemblies, centrifugal pump rotors, and inlet nozzle rings for turbines.
Torvac Ltd., Histon, Cambridge, England. Photo resist spinners with multiple spindles Headway Research Inc. are producing a completely new line of multiple-spindle photo resist spinners. They are designed for long-lasting, heavy duty use in the application of photosensitive films to microcircuits, and have up to five individual spinners operated by one electronically-regulated motor drive. Special features include : • Simple operation : each spin cycle is automatic and includes the application and removal of vacuum to the chuck. • Vacuum interlock on each c h u c k - - n o vacuum, no spin. This provides protection from substrate breakage through improper seating, loss of vacuum to the machine, etc. • Independent operation and timing of each vacuum chuck. • High starting torque ; quick stopping. • Variable speed from 150 to 5,000 r.p.m., electronically regulated. • Handling of substrates from 0.25 ins. to 2.5 ins.
A 6-pp. selection guide to reactive organosilicon chemicals has been issued by Dow Corning. It gives complete properties, typical reactions, and known applications of more than 30 intermediates, and covers organochlorosilanes, organoalkoxysilanes, ambifunctional silanes and other chemicals. The intermediates are useful as permanently bonded surface treatments with excellent water repellency and high dielectric strength; for copolymerizing with organic materials to improve thermal stability, weather resistance, and moisture resistance ; as coupling agents for molecular bridges between organic resins and hydroxylcontaining substrates ; and for other purposes. The guide is coded 03-014 and is available from either of the addresses given below. Dow Corning International Ltd., Box 97, Nassau, N.P., Bahamas ; Kreuzstrasse 60, 8008 Zurich, Switzerland.
Thin film crucible furnace Evaporation Apparatus Inc. are producing a crucible furnace for high temperature service designated the CF-5. It is labyrinthshielded to concentrate energy and to reduce power requirements and heat generated to other parts of the vacuum system ; it is stated to have substantially reduced the burnout and distortion problems sometimes occurring in other types of crucible heater. A data sheet, and a catalogue on a line of thin film sources, is available from C. L. Goldsworth, at the address below.
