Ionic& Czech partner to clean up water aquifer Ionics Incorporated has announced that Ionics-Mega sro, its joint venture company in the Czech Republic, has received a $5.6 million order from Diamo sp, the successor company to the Czech state uranium industry. Ionics-Mega will supply Diamo with a system to help remediate an underground water aquifer contaminated by the by-products of an acid leaching process for uranium mining. Approximately $4.0 million will involve equipment and services supplied by Ionics. The wastewater treatment system will use Ionics’ proprietary electrodialysis reversal membrane technology to remove and concentrate the contaminants, producing water of sufficient purity to allow discharge to a local river. The process stream containing the concentrated contaminants will be further treated by an evaporator and crystallizer wastewater treatment system. This is currently being installed by Ionics under an earlier contract from Diamo to remediate a large underground reservoir of sulphuric acid solution which was formed in the process of mining uranium ore. Both wastewater treatment systems will be located at the former uranium mining site approximately 100 km from Prague. Microscopic honeycomb structures developed Japanese researchers have produced the worlds smallest honeycomb structure reports The NLkkel Weekly (7 August, 1995). Potential applications range from filters for very 6ne particles or viruses to the manufacture of advanced semiconductors. The cells of the honeycomb are 70 nm in diameter and are arranged at uniform intervals of 100 run. According to the report, the research project was inspired by a phenomenon in which the surface of an aluminium plate in an acid solution becomes porous aluminium oxide when an electric charge is passed through it. Researchers learned that the size of the Membrane Technology No. 65
