Venous Interventional Radiology with Clinical Perspectives Edited by Scott J. Savader and Scott 0. Trerotola New York NY: Thieme, 1996, cloth, $125.00. Venous Interventional Radiology with Clinical Perspectives is a comprehensive text dedicated to imaging and intervention in the venous system. While many venous interventions grew out of those in the arterial system, this text acknowledges that venous interventional techniques have matured and now merit their own niche. The growth of many interventional radiology practices has been facilitated by the developments in venous interventions, which have increased in number and scope. With this growth has come a need for communication between clinicians and radiologists concerning technical planning and patient management. This text addresses both in a well organized, thorough fashion. Figures, tables, and images are well labeled and of excellent quality. Each chapter is supported by an extensive, up-to-date reference section. The book is divided into 10 sections, each of which includes several chapters. Major sections include portal hypertension, venous embolization, hemodialysis access management, chronic infusion catheters, and central venous stenosis and occlusion. Shorter sections focus on the management of thromboembolic disease, venous sampling, and techniques for catheter repositioning and foreign body retrieval. Documentation of technique is provided mainly by selected

images obtained during various stages of a given procedure. In several cases, photographs of the operator performing the procedure are provided. Although this is more than adequate for the experienced interventional radiologist, more extensive use of schematic diagrams would have been useful for residents and fellows. Each section concludes with a chapter offering a clinical perspective. Some of these chapters are short and could have been expanded. Two of the better ones are "Vascular access for hemodialysis: a nephrologist's perspective" and "A transplant surgeon's perspective," both in the section on dialysis access management. In summary, Venous Znterventional Radiology with Clinical Perspectives is a well organized, comprehensive text dedicated to venous interventions. As these procedures become an increasingly important aspect of the interventional radiologist's practice, familiarity with these techniques will be imperative. This book will serve both as an excellent reference for the experienced interventional radiologist, as well as a "how to" guide for practitioners seeking to expand their venous intervention practice. -Reviewed
