WATER & WASTEWATER ADB FUNDS WATER PROJECTS IN CAMBODIA, NEPAL The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved US$34.6 million in loans and grants to aid the development of water infrastructure in the region. The projects encompass a US$6.3 million loan to help improve sanitation and supply in seven provincial towns of Cambodia and a US$24 million loan for similar work in Nepal, as well as a US$4.3 million technical assistance grant to promote effective water management policies and practices. The funding in Cambodia is in addition to an ADB loan of US$20 million approved in December 1999 to provide better living conditions for 350 000 people in seven towns. It has several subprojects, including upgrading water supply facilities, such as intakes, treatment plants, and distribution networks, as well

as rebuilding a sewage collection and transmission network, and, a treatment plant. The extra funding reflects a revision of the cost of the project from US$26.3 million to US$34.6 million that follows a decision to rebuild rather than repair many of the facilities. The completion date of the water supply component will be extended from March 2004 to June 2005 and the wastewater management system from June to December 2005 in order to accommodate the revisions to the project. The Nepalese project will provide safe water supply and sanitation in poor and remote areas of mid-western and farwestern Nepal. It will improve facilities in 1200 communities in 21 districts, benefiting about 850 000 people The project will develop and/or repair the rural water supply and sanitation infrastructure, including gravity systems, hand pumps for tube wells, pipes with overhead tanks, and rainwater systems. It will also set up a revolving fund to provide credit for the construction of family latrines and finance sanitation facilities for schools. The total estimated project cost is US$35.7 million equivalent, with completion set for the end of 2009.
