CyberSource receives investment from Visa company CyberSource, which develops F ledgling commerce applications that include secure online payment and a fraud screening application, has received an equity investment by Visa. In addition to the equity investment, the two companies have begun exchanging data and expertise. Future collaborative activities aimed at improving online shopping for Visa member banks and their merchants are currently in the planning stage. Both companies said the deal will offer a more secure environment to provide E-business services. Two areas the companies will target include shielding Web merchants and their banks from Internet credit card fraud and implementing more robust payment abilities to help merchants come online faster and less expensively. "CyberSource's expertise is in being able to set up companies to handle all their online businesses. For Visa, it's an enabling strategy," said executive vice president Todd Chaffee, of Visa International. He also said that by using their technology and expertise, smaller businesses can get online. called CyberSource GeoPay as well as real-time sales and tax calculations called GlobalTax and SmartCert for secure digital delivery. He added that the partnership extends Visa's strength in ensuring easy and secure transactions to the virtual marketplace. "We make it easier for merchants to go live on the Intemet and that's what Visa was particularly interested in" Visa also recently took other steps in its major push to convince consumers that using their Visa cards to shop on the Internet is safe. Among the most important of Visa's security measures is that cardholders who report a questionable online purchase within hours of learning about it will not be liable for any part of the charge. According to a recent Jupiter Communications report on online shopping, 99% of online purchases will be made with credit cards through 2002. Visa now has 51% market share, the report stated. Visa plans to ramp up its promotion of online shopping with television and print ads as well as an online guide for safe shopping online.

Embedded in the BIOS will be a compact version of Veridicom's OpenTouch software, which will capture, e n h a n c e and v e r i f y f i n g e r p r i n t images. O n c e a fingerprint is verified, the BIOS will grant the user access to the computer.

The company is able to develop software that leverages its sensor and can be adapted for uses such as preboot security. Veridicom's software is the only fingerprint authentication software currently running in the BIOS and can be stored in less than 50 KB, making it one of the smallest, most accurate fingerprint options available today. Over the next few months, Veridicom and Phoenix will work together on a production version of this technology for release in early 1999.
