A very simple and versatile method is presented for estimating the vertical dynamic stiffness and damping coefficient of a rigid foundation with arbitrary base shape, embedded in a homogeneous half-space and with partial or complete sidewall-soil contact. The method is illustrated with a specific numerical example and is shown to be superior to approximate techniques currently available. 34 refs.

A fresh air shaft, 750m deep and 4.3m diameter, the largest hole ever blind drilled in hard rock, has been completed at the Agnew No 1 Mine, Western Australia. The rock strata encountered, metagabbro, phlogopite schist and actinolite gneiss, each caused different problems. The project was finally stopped some 220m short of intended depth, due to drill rig problems.

The use of the boundary element method in rock mechanics is briefly discussed. Taking a tungsten mine as an example, an improved computer program is used to examine the deformation behaviour for eight double and single stopes, at different depths and different initial stress conditions. The effects of mined out areas on stope behaviour are also investigated. Calculations and long-term in situ measurements are compared.

Statistical examination has been made of borehole survey data and the factors r, radius of curvature, and E, angle of the plane of curvature, evaluated. Effects of various geological factors and mechanical variables such as drill rod type have been investigated. A mathematical simulation of a borehole is proposed, based on average values of r and E and estimated geology, to examine the effects of different geological models on final end of hole position and length of borehole to reach a target, and thus likely time and cost.

Details of the project, problems encountered, the raise drill solution and description of the raise drilling are given. This is one of the first attempts at using a raise drill for the precision directional drilling of an inclined pilot bore.
