53A selection for the large pumped storage power plant at Hoskora. Lithological heterogeneity, signs of tectbnic deformatioii and recent movements, as well as the diversity of the young and deeply dissected landscape were examined comprehensively using photointerpretation and a geophysical. survey. Evaluation of rock mass heterogeneity provides the basis for further detailed investigation and optimum site selection.
862111 Vibratory phenomena in oil drill holes. Application to the calculation of the volume of underground cavities (In French) Berest. P Rev Fr Geotech N32, 1985, M-17 Natural or man-made cavities - storage caverns, karstic voids, hydraulic fractures - are often only accessible via narrow drill bores, and information on their size and shape can only be gained by the use of costly and sophisticated techniques. It is suggested that this information can be gathered simply and cheaply by measuring the period of natural vibration of the fluid filling the cavity and bore (water, brine, air, hydrocarbons etc). The theoretical background, and an example of the application of this technique, are presented for the cases of open and closed shafts.
Remote sensing and photographic techniques 862114 Use of photography to record geologic data McClay, P L Bull Assoc Engng Geol V22. N2, May 1985. P143-151
A simple method of illustrating documentary photographs has been used for the proposed Liquid Natural Gas facility at Little Cojo Bay, California, USA. The method combines both geologic data and photographic images through the use of clear mylar or acetate overlays. Details of the methodology and photographic presentation are given.
Structural and geotechnical mapping 862115 Tunnel mapping in strong discontinuous rocks. Technical note McCrae, R; Cook, R Znt J Min Engng V3, NI. March 1985, P79-89
Two major aims of geological mapping in discontinuous rocks, the prediction of possible instabilities and determining support requirements, and rock mass characterization are examined in detail.

An improved method of gaining geotechnical information has been developed to cope with the wide range of soils and soil properties encountered in extending the power transmission system in Brazil. It includes a preliminary study using topographical and geological information to identify the pedalogical mapping unit, field investigation using a manual auger, with exploratory trenches in high-load areas, and laboratory measurement of shear strength, compressibility and permeability. The evaluation of this method for site investigation for an experimental transmission line in a residual soil area, and the calculation of uplift loads on the foundations of transmission towers, are described.
862113 Choice of design parameters from ‘in situ’ tests in residual soils in Singapore Pitts, J; Broms, B B; Kannan, R Proc 1st International Conference on Geomechanics in Tropical Lateritic and Saprolitic Soils, BrasiZia, II-14 February 1985 V2, PIOI-107. Pub1 Sao Paulo: Brazilian Society for Soil Mechanics, 1985
Site investigation for the NT1 campus in Singapore allowed a comparison of the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and the Ram Sounding Test. Good correlation between the results of the two tests was observed. The weathered soils of the Jurong formation are inhomogeneous, often with highly dipping structures, and it is difficult to obtain truly representative results from testing in widely spaced boreholes. Ram soundings are cheap and quick to perform and require no boreholes, and preliminary results suggest they may be used to complement borehole tests under the conditions considered. 0
Rotary penetration tests are normally used in Norway for preliminary mapping of subsurface soil conditions. Results, after 15 years experience, are generally reliable. Current work at NGI is aimed at improving the equipment to give more reliable information on hard layers and depth to bedrock. 862117 Reconnaissance of fractured media with several systems of fractures by means of harmonic techniques Crosnier, B; Fras, G; Jouanna, P Rock Mech V18, N2. April-June 1985, P77-105 The method of interpreting hydraulic tests in a harmonic state described by Fras et al (1981) is applied to a physical laboratory model which simulates a fractured rock environment with several sets of cracks of different thicknesses. The problem of practical identification of the fracture parameters using a theoretical file of spectral signatures is examined. It is possible to envisage an in situ survey using a harmonic probe.

These seismic anomalies are described and are related to hydrocarbon gases present in gravity cores collected from the Navarin continental margin. 59 refs.
