BOOK REVIEWS Biological Oceanographic Processes By T. R. PAgso,~s, M. TAKAHASHIand B. HARGKAVE This revised edition of a popular textbook is designed to lead the reader through a stepwise progression from the distribution of marine organisms, to discussions on trophic relations, to a final chapter on some practical applications of biological oceanography to fisheries and pollution problems. It covers subject matter in the pelagic and benthic environments, and is intended to bridge a gap between entirely descriptive oceanography texts and those on the mathematical modelling of marine ecosystems. Major changes in the 3rd edition include a complete rewrite of Chapter 7 on "'Some practical problems in biological oceanography" in order to bring out the current relevance of an ecosystem approach to fisheries and pollution problems; the inclusion of a new section on water mass movement relative to phytoplankton production; improved information on the feed of zooplankton and a rewrite of Chapter 6 on "Benthic communities". These changes have been accomplished through the addition of approximately 200 new references to the current literature. This text is ideal for undergraduate and introductory graduate courses in biological oceanography. Contents: Distribution of Plankton and Nutrients; Chemical Composition; The Primary Formation of Particulate Materials; Plankton Feeding and Production; Biological Cycles; Biological Oceanographic Processes in Marine Benthic Communities: Some Practical Problems in Biological Oceanography. Available from Pergamon Press. Headington Hill Hall, Oxford OX3 0BW, England. ISBN 0 08 030765 5. 1983. 344 pp. Price: £10.95 (paperback). Viral Pollution of the Environment Edited by G. tissue culture and physiology) knowledge of the organisms in the genus Giardia has advanced tremendously in the last two decades. The editors of this volume have collected papers from many of the leading researchers on Giardia and giardiasis in order to present an up-to-date review of the current knowledge on the organism as well as the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. The papers cover: The biology of the organism and structural-functional relationships. The disease caused by the parasite and the immunological reactions that occur within the host. Recent studies related to the epidemiology of giardiasis. Available from Plenum Press, 233 Spring Street, New York, NY 10013. U.S.A. Price: US$65.00. Biological Health Risks of Sludge Disposal to Land in Cold Climates Edited by P. M. WALLIS and D. L. LEHMANN This book was compiled by the editors in an attempt to summarize as much information as possible about the health hazards from biological pathogens associated with sludge disposal to land in cold climates. It does not deal with hazards presented by organic chemicals or from trace elements in sewage sludge. The editors have been guided in their selection and presentation of material by the need for reasonable guidelines for land disposal of sewage sludge in order to reduce the health risk from biological pathogens to a minimum. This book is intended to provide information useful to planners, legislators, engineers, and scientists concerned with sludge disposal. It is composed of contributed papers, literature reviews, and summaries by authors from Canada, Britain, France and Sweden and the U.S.A. The papers that appear in this book were all presented at a symposium in Calgary, Canada in 1982. The summary chapters were prepared from the presented papers and literature reviews, and from discussions held between the conference participants. Available from The University of Calgary Press, 2500 University Drive N.W., Calgary, Alberta, Canada T2N IN4. ISBN 0 919813 00 3. Price: CDN$18.00. Processing and Use of Sewage Sludge Proceedings of the Third International Symposium Edited by P. L'HERMtTE and H. Oar
Edited by STANLEY L. ERLANDSEN and ERNEST A. MEYER
This Symposium was sponsored by the Commission of the European Communities, and held at Brighton in 1983. The proceedings have been published in one volume, following the order of presentation at the conference. Session I--Sludge processing. Session 2--Chemical pollution of sludge. Session 3---Hygienic constraints to the use of sludge in agriculture due to the content of pathogens. Session 4--Valorization of sludges. Session 5---Environmental effects of sludges. Conclusions and Recommendations.
