MasterCard study: consumers are embracing the next generation of payments

he end of passwords and biometrics were among the most engaging payment topics on social media in 2015, reflected in social conversations in 163 countries around the world, according to a study commissioned by MasterCard. Fingerprint and electrocardiogram (ECG) paymentsrelated technology became an engaging topic for users throughout the year, while facial recognition (selfie pays) remained a top driver (55%) of biometrics-focused conversation. The fourth annual MasterCard Mobile Payments Study, developed in partnership with Prime Research, tracked 2m global social media posts about mobile payments across Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Forums, Google+ and YouTube, up from 85,000 posts in 2012. Supporting this increased interest was a continued positive sentiment about mobile payments technology, continuing a two-year trend. Digital wallets including Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Android Pay and MasterPass dominated mobile payments conversations in 2015 (97%), centred on product launches, service improvements and how users are evaluating them. Outside of digital wallet discussions, contactless cards (47%) drove conversations, followed by biometrics (33%), personal payments (14%) and

The Dutch participants of the first worldwide test by MasterCard and ICS were mostly positive about the ease of use of biometric payments. Of those surveyed, 95% of the fingerprint users and 80% of the facial recognition users said that shopping became more convenient using biometric authentication. Almost 75% of users are convinced that biometric payments will decrease fraud. The 750 ABN AMRO cardholders have been able to complete their online purchases without pin codes, passwords or confirmation codes over six months. The pilot in the Netherlands has led to commercial interest from around the world – MasterCard will be launching this technology in the US, Canada and parts of Europe in the summer of 2016.

NEWS how biometrics and in-vehicle integrations are being incorporated into Visa Checkout at Mobile World Congress. “The incredible growth in connected commerce makes this the perfect time to bring Visa Checkout to the hundreds of millions of connected consumers using mobile devices across Europe and India today,” says Sam Shrauger, senior vice president of digital solutions, Visa Inc. “Following the successful launch and growth of Visa Checkout in many countries last year – including Brazil, China, Mexico, New Zealand and Singapore – we’re continuing our momentum in 2016, with the long term vision of making it easier for consumers to use their Visa cards on any device, anywhere in the world.” Separately, biometric technology supplier Morpho and Visa are working together to explore several new payment concepts, which were co-demonstrated by the two companies at Mobile World Congress. Some of the demonstrations included biometrics for proximity payments, including the use of MorphoWave technology, a biometric solution capturing and matching four fingerprints with a single hand movement in less than a second. Anne Bouverot, CEO of Morpho, says: “In addition to touchless fingerprint recognition for proximity payments, we are incorporating facial recognition capability into smartphones and tablets, enabling users to validate payments through a simple selfie.” According to the global market research firm TrendForce, by the end of 2016 total revenue of the worldwide mobile payment market is estimated to total $620bn, representing an annual growth of 37.8%. Biometrics are in the top three technologies that will do the most to transform e-commerce this year, according to the findings of Juniper Research. It revealed the top three disruptive technologies are biometrics, federated identity and tokenisation. Juniper Research’s report, ‘Top 10 Disruptive Technologies in Fintech: 2016’ concludes that the technology making the biggest difference to payment completion today is biometrics, largely thanks to the proliferation of fingerprint readers in smartphones.

customers, the technology will aim to offer a secure banking experience for 15m customers by the summer. The new security processes will enable customers to access their accounts using a mobile app or telephone banking through voice and fingerprint verification of an their identity. The rollout comes after several other UK banks have adopted biometric technology, including Barclays, RBS, NatWest and startup Atom Bank. HSBC UK’s head of retail banking and wealth management, Francesca McDonagh says: “This is the largest planned roll out of voice biometric security technology in the UK.” The launch of biometric technology for HSBC and first direct is supported by online consumer research findings from research firm YouGov which reveal over a third (37%) of consumers agree traditional passwords have become an outdated security measure. The YouGov research also revealed over a third (38%) of people tend to use the same password across most of their online accounts, and over half (55%) say that they rarely update their passwords. The voice biometrics technology implemented by HSBC and first direct works by cross-checking against over 100 unique identifiers and includes both behavioural features such as speed, cadence and pronunciation and physical aspects including the shape of larynx, vocal tract and nasal passages. Customers that choose to opt in enrol their voice print and are no longer required to remember or recite their telephone security password letters or PIN. HSBC and first direct have also enabled their mobile banking apps with Apple’s touch ID. First direct will begin to enrol customers for voice ID and will be followed by HSBC by the summer.
