'Parallel algorithms for VLSI' covers the solution, with highly parallel and synchronous computation of.numerical and combinatorial problems. The section on 'VLSI Architectures' deals with single chip processors of various types designed mainly as repetitive structures such as arrays and trees of elementary interconnected units. 'Layout' presents theoretical results on the complexity of circuit layout and algorithms for planar figure compaction and wire routing. 'Topics in circuit design' include the realization of large digital networks and the simulation of device behaviour that is relevant in CAD systems. The final section on 'Language issues' deals with the programming approach to

These include such topics as survey of stack algorithms for collisiondetecting channels and their analysis, performance modelling for multiprocessor systems and the normal approximation and queue control for response times in a processor-shared computer system model. The papers cover the determination of salient features such as throughput and response time by stochastic modelling which then gives rise to new probabilistic problems. These in turn may be reduced to the analysis of specific continuous processes related to queuing models.
