his is the time of year when there is much talk about elections. There are local, state and national elections that shape the landscape of our nation with each and every election cycle. Voting is a privilege and is something to be taken very seriously. We see voter turnouts that are an embarrassment to our founding fathers at every level. It is so important that all eligible voters participate. Understandably the media can be helpful or a distraction to what the important issues are and how candidates are portrayed to the public. Candidates are neither as bad nor as good as they are portrayed at times. Heated discussions can abound and relationships can be strained. The interesting thing is that this is not new. A look at history will show that these heated discussions have gone on since the birth of our nation. Our nation is not perfect but each of us has the privilege to make our voice heard by voting in every election. This is also the time of year to consider seeking AANP elected office. The Call for Nominations will be open November 1 e 30. Learn more about the offices up for election and how you can use your expertise and energy to help guide this wonderful organization. Information will be available at aanp.org. I am truly honored to have served as a state representative, region director, recording secretary and now as the AANP president. All eligible voters in the AANP 2017 election will receive notification when the electronic ballot is distributed. Voting opens March 16 and closes March 31. I encourage each of you to read the bios, get to know the candidates as best you can and then exercise your privilege to vote in your professional organization’s election. NPs stand at the ready to care for patients across the lifespan in every community of this great nation. With your help and participation, AANP will continue to lead in NP practice, education, advocacy, research and leadership. The privilege of voting was not always a given. Please use that privilege each and every time you have the opportunity. Your vote is your voice e let it be heard. Cindy Cooke, DNP, FNP-C, FAANP 1555-4155/16/$ see front matter © 2016 Elsevier Inc.
