purification
Hipersep is a new range of purification systems relying on high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which has been designed and produced by the French company Separex. HPLC makes it possible to attain an exceptional degree of purity in separation applications. Hipersep 50 is based on an axial compression column with a diameter of’50 mm. The base system includes the column, a series of eluent collector and selector valves, a detection unit and a recorder. The system is controlled by a microcomputer, fully automated and can operate around the clock. It takes into account the possibility of chromatogram drift and automatically adjusts the cutoff points. Hipersep 50 is ideal for laboratory work and can produce quantities of about 20 or 30 grammes/day. Separex also manufactures production-scale units such as 282

II pharmaceutical-grade
A new Fluorodyne Ii pharmaceutical-grade filter introduced by Pall Ultrafiltration Company provides safe and reliable sterile filtration of a wide range of liquids. Applications include sterile filtration of ophthalmics and dilute protein solutions, hot water, chemicals and solvents. The Pall proprietary waterwettable polyvinylidene (PVDF) double-layer membrane exhibits broad chemical compatibility, high temperature rating, long steam life and superior bacterial removal efficiency. These absolute-rated 0.2 py filters are easily wetted for integrity testing, and offer exceptionally high flow rates. The high flow rates and low pressure drop of Fluorodyne II filters permit the use of smaller filtration systems, resulting in

reduced operating costs and lower product hold-up. The filter cartridges have been validated by bacterial challenge and 100% integrity tested by the forward flow method to ensure their efficacy as sterilising grade filters. Production filter cartridges are sampled and routinely tested by the bacterial challenge test. Samples from every batch are tested for oxidisable substances, endotoxins, particulates and pH shift per USP methodology, and are steam autoclave tested. Each filter carries a serial number, ensuring full traceability. Pall Ultrafine Filtration Company, 25 Harbor Park Drive, Port Washinaton. systems the Hipersep 200, which is architectured around a 200 mm axial compression column. The basic system is fully automated, and runs on a microcomputer specifically designed for use in an industrial environment. Hipersep 200 is available in explosion-proof and cleaning-in-place (CIP) versions. Designed for use in the pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries, the Hipersep range of products is backed by a decade of experience in custom purification systems. enhances
silo vent filters
In response to the growth in pneumatic conveying, Dustcheck Ltd has extended and improved its range of self-contained silo vent filters. Designed to prevent product escaping to atmosphere, the SFJ series now contains 30 weatherproofed models for installation as orlginal equipment or as retrofits. Filter capacities now range from 1 to 77 m2, with media suitable for all types of powder. The earliest series stopped at 51 m2 filter area. The chief improvements are conical cartridge filter elements - to enhance efficiency and optimise particulate release and either clean or dirty-side access for inspection and element renewal. Both features are thought to be unique. Depending on the rating, a silo vent filter contains from 4 to 48 conical elements. The novel shape of this latest element significantly improves flow profiles, producing a differential-pressure curve superior to that of a cylindrical element. This results in more efficient element cleaning with better utilisation of the air cleaning pulse - and an element life extended by up to 30%. In addition, conical elements allow air velocities to be increased, to give a higher volume flow for a given filter area, and filter body sizes to be reduced for a given filtration duty. Filter media are available to filter any product type to efficiencies well within EPA requirements. The provision of dirty-side access ensures that elements

can be inspected and renewed without releasing ‘free’ particulate into the clean chamber. For simplicity and speed, elements are replaced by screwing them off and on threaded adaptors by hand. Tools are not required. Clean-side cartridge removal is also available, enabling models to be supplied to meet most installation limitations. In operation, the elements are cleaned on a pre-programmed basis by a reverse jet of compressed air pulsed into the clean side. This dislodges the filtered cake, which is returned to the silo. The range contains basic, weatherproof, duct-spigot and fan-assisted models, all complete with filter upstands. A series has also been developed specifically for silos filled by road tankers. Incorporating a combined filter upstand, weathercowl and weld-on spigot, these competitively priced filters are generally available exstock. The filter housing is a strong steel body of two-piece construction designed for easy retrofitting to the silo top by the mounting spigot, which can be bolted, fixed or welded in position. All SFJ silo vent fiiters are prewired to an automatic cleaning controller. They are made for electrical supplies of 11.0, 220 and 240 V, single-phase 50 Hz, and require a compressed air service at 6 bar. option
Elga has now extended its wellproven Option range of laboratory water purifiers, with the introduction of the new Elgastat Option 5. Incorporating a combination of adsorption, reverse OSmosis, ionic/organic removal, photo-oxidation and optional microfiltration, Option 5 has been designed primarily to provide a pressurised supply of high-grade reagent water for clinical analysers. Up to 8 l/hr of water conforming to BS 3978 and IS0 3696 Grade 2 standards is delivered to a tank and recirculated around a ring-main. A powerful recirculation pump, coupled with a pressure regulator, enables pressure of up
to 2.1 bar to be achieved in the loop. Depending on the pressure, the water can be dispensed at flowrates of 15 - 30 l/hr via a maximum of three outlets. Option 5 complements larger Elgastat Medica and Optima units used for clinical and general laboratory purposes, and is suitable for any application requiring a pressurised supply of high-purity reagant water.
