FOCUS food grade preservatives such as sodium benzoate. The efficacious use of these natural preservatives requires a pH level near 5.0, which sacrifices formulation clarity and flow properties when using currently available rheology modifiers. Carbopol Aqua SF-2 polymer responds to this market trend by offering rheology modification that delivers high clarity and superior suspension in the 4 to 6 pH range. Now formulators can display colourful beads, sparkling pearls and exfoliating scrubs while also achieving claims of ‘paraben-free’, ‘formaldehyde-free’, ‘preservativefree’ and even ‘skin neutral pH’. Carbopol Aqua SF-2 polymer delivers high clarity, viscosity and suspension performance in a wide variety of formulations. US enzymes market (Ref: 2670) Freedonia has recently published a new market research report: US Enzymes Market. Demand for enzymes in the US is forecast to rise by 5.1%/y to $2.7 bn in 2014. Solid industry growth in recent years has been founded upon advances in higher-value, speciality enzymes used in applications such as pharmaceuticals, research and biotechnology, and biocatalysts, as well as the emerging biofuels market. Going forwards, gains will come from continued expansion in these areas. Although speciality enzymes are becoming the higher-value segment, industrial enzymes will continue to see stable growth in markets such as pulp and paper processing, animal feed, cosmetics and toiletries, and cleaning products. Market leaders such as Novozymes and Danisco, competing in the industrial segment, will continue to fight off the downward sales pressures coming from commoditization and maturing markets by introducing new, moretechnical and specially tailored enzymes. In all industrial markets, demand for enzymes will be supported by their more environmentally friendly nature on a variety of levels, including their ability NOVEMBER 2010

Water-soluble polymers have bright prospects In 2009, China produced around 800,000 tonnes of water-soluble polymers, around a fifth of the worldwide total. Sales of these polymers were some RMB Yuan 24 bn (€2.6 bn). Around 17 categories of water-soluble polymers are manufactured in China. These chemicals have applications in various industrial sectors, including the paper industry (consuming 70,000 tonne/y of polyacrylamide); detergent additives (consuming 39,000 tonne/y of polycarboxylic acid); construction chemicals (consuming 85,000 tonne/y of water-soluble polymers); and others. Brief descriptions are given regarding the use of water-soluble polymers in each of these sectors, with an indication of the prospects for growth in each. Asia-Pacific to drive demand growth in global flavours & fragrances market The demand for fragrances and flavours is estimated to increase at the rate of 5.3% during 2009-2014 to reach $6.480 bn in 2014 in the Asia Pacific, according to new data from the Freedonia Group. Global demand is predicted to touch $23.5 bn in 2014 with a growth rate of 4.1%/y. The Asia-Pacific regions such as China and India are forecasted to witness the fastest growth and account for one-third of total value gains between 2009 and 2014. Demand in AsiaPacific is predicted to surpass the figures in Western Europe to become the second largest consumer of flavours and fragrances after North America, where the US alone accounts for a quarter of global demand. Demand growth in Central and South America, Eastern Europe and the Africa/Mideast regions will also all outpace the global average. The report finds that fragrances will continue to play an important role in product differentiation in the toiletries

and cleaners segments. Demand in the well-established detergents and cleaners industry will be limited by market maturity, even in developing regions such as Eastern Europe, while faster growth is expected for applications in cosmetics and toiletries. Symrise expands production facility for perfume oils Symrise has substantially expanded its fragrance production capacity. The company put two new mixing and dosing facilities for perfume oils into operation in Holzminden, Germany, on 25 Aug 2010. The total investment volume is approximately €5 M. The new facilities consist of a production dosing system for additional raw materials and a 1000-element dosing system that guarantees a precise mixing of the perfume oils through its maximal level of automation of nearly 90%. The new systems will also lead to a 25% increase in production capacity. Symrise produces around a third of the worldwide demand for perfume oils in Holzminden; the expansion will make the site the central production site for perfume oils for the EAME region (Europe, Africa, Middle East), the company says. The expansion will create approximately 30 new jobs. More than 2000 raw materials are processed at the site into fragrance compositions for fine fragrances, body care products, detergents and household cleaners. In 1H 2010, the company’s scent & care business division recorded a sales growth of more than 20%.
